I was recently given a Penn 209. The reel is still in the box and appears to have never been used. The receipt was even still in the box, so I know it was originally purchased in 1989. Does anyone have any experience with this reel and if so how does it cast? I realize it is a bit old, but thought it could be a back up reel.

i have 4 i use for freshwater striper trolling and spanish mackerely trolling. They can be cast but they certainly aren't really designed for it.

Bottom fishing from a boat.
Forgiving and reliable reel, but I don't think it's high tech.

A Penn 209 is a great reel, just not made for casting. If you decide to cast it on a heaver make sure you're using a leather glove.

I got one and can throw it about 100 yards .... they need magged for good casting but they will work ..... using mine now for bridge / pier reel .... One big hint is use bigger line .... small dia. line can get in between the spool and reel .... I use 20 and no problems ....
