I was about to put line on new reels tonight and just wondered how you know when you have enough. I know with all the reels I have had in the past I just know by sight when they are full. Is that what everyone else does or do you count handle turns X how much is retreived per revolution?

My rule of thumb is about 1/8" from the lip of the spool.

Give or take a little.

That "line retrieved per handle turn" rating is only good for a FULL spool. It means nothing at the bottom of the spool.

1/8" from the lip is good advice! ;)

thanks newsjeff...I'll give it a try.

Railroader........that is exactly what I was thinking....just thought I would ask to see if there is something I'm missing.

Thats good for a conventional...On a spinner, I get it just to the end of the spool.

There are no stupid questions...I ask them every day...

No offense, but it's just the opposite for me. Espically with many of the braided lines. Too full of a spool on a spinning reel will give ya some wicked wind knots with most braids.

I generally pack my conventionals a little closer to the lip. Espically with my smaller reels like the Abu 6500s and 525mags, where line capacity plays a factor.

As ya know, a full spool on a conventional will make your reel that much faster on the cast. Maybe too fast for ya.

I do the 1/8 inch with mono and amost to the brim with braid which I use on my smaller set ups.
