I'm looking at an Okuma Coronado 90 Baitfeeder fishing reel. Does anyone have any stories or words of wisdom about them? Are they decent?

you will hear they are anywhere from great little reel to an evil piece of equipment .... I've got an AV50 and no problems yet ...

Has been excellent. They've been dunked numerous times and still run just fine.
I really have to thank bubbablue again for them.
You'll hear great things, like my experience and bad things about them.
In the long run though if you are going to take good care of it theres no reason not to get the best you can afford

Good and Bad. I have several. To ME, they ae worth their weight in gold. It's like anything else, if you take care of it, it will last a while.

They have a baitfeeder in the Epixor model too...I have 2 Inspiras...an Eclipz..and an Avenger..and they are all sweet reels...The new Salina line that is out looks like a beast of a reel..double drag system.

:D :D :D
Braid/mono,
Circle/J,
Okuma is good/is crap...
never ends....
ALL of the spinners, that I use, are Okuma. I have 6 Epixor EBs and 2 Coronado CDs... all baitfeeders. Not to mention a number of Avengers. I love them all. Never had a problem with ANY of them.
Yeah, I've also got a few Shimanos and Penns, but they keep my Uglys company in the garage collecting dust. ;)

What are the guys that say they are so crappy doing...picking up those models they sell in the convenience store?...I know.it's a never ending thing...and I've seen it several times just since I joined..and again..love the ones I have. They haven't replaced my Daiwas...but at least a couple of them go with me everytime I go fishing.

Okuma makes a very decent reel. With that said, let me also say they need to be cared for more so than some of the older reels that were made years ago. They have a lot of bearing, are very smooth, but can be subject to corossion problems. The remedy is simple. Just keep the reel clean. Wipe it off with a damp cloth after use. Don't dunk it in water and don't flush it off with water. It will give you years of service if cared for.

I have 5 different Okumas and love them all. I had a problem with one. I caused the problem and sent it to Okuma and they repaired the reel and charged me nothing. I also have several Daiwas and love them also. I think it's all in what you get and how you look after them. But in all brand there are going to be some bad ones. Like my Captiva. It just happened to be a piece of crap and it has been repaired three times at no cost to me. Through my many years I am like most fishermen/women I have my favorite reels for different types of fishing. So the best suggestion would be to become a TACKLE HO and buy many different ones. I'm up to 34 rods and reels so far.:D

I have had no issues with my Okuma it not a Penn but it doesn't suck so if you don't have Penn dollars you can give it a try

I said that they are a lousy brand imho because I bought their best spinning reel (the VS) and stripped the gears in about 6 months. Now I was using the reel to catch mostly tog and sheepshead so it was taking some serious hook sets and pressure. A penn slammer is about the same price as a VS and will hold up much better from my experience. One positive thing that I can say is that (minus the shipping cost) the reel was repaired for free and in a very timely manner I have had to wait months to get a reel back from penn before:fishing:
Me personally I prefer daiwa followed by shimano

I've heard of people stripping gears closing the bail while the weight is still in the air .... other than that I've never heard of it being done with normal use on any reel

when toggin and sheepsheading w/ spinning reels I keep the drag locked down pretty tight so when I set the hook I'm dragging the fish out of structure pretty quick (like grouper fishing) and usually using 30-50 lb braid so I'm definitely stressing the reel pretty hard, some reels can handle it some can't. for stripers trout drum etc this reel would probably never have a problem

I didn't open it up to see for myself, but it felt stripped? regardless it was no longer fishable.

That is certainly the best way to strip gears in a spinning reel..I did the same thing grouper fishing..1st drop got a bite and set the hook and thats all she wrote...16 ounces of lead and a 19 inch grouper did the trick.
What kind did you strip..?

I bought an Avenger once.
It didn't last me a single season.
Now I fish Daiwa spinners.
And nothing else.

I bought a VS two years ago still running smooth and working very well.
I love my Okuma, just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the replies and opinions everyone.
I think I'll give one a try and find out for myself. I will be using it mostly for drum and stripers. I wish I could afford the good stuff but I got to start somewhere.

My take on the Okuma is that they do not have the consistency. Seems like, from talking to shop owners that sell them, that you have 6 out of ten reels work fine and a good deal for the money, 2 are shaky at best and have a few problems but worth returning, and last two are just Junk.... I have a 65 cd that has been a good reel. I have a nice bout with a big black drum that the drag and gears got a workout with out any problems and it worked well. Tells me I got the 6 out of ten. So be careful with the 40% that is not worth it. I will only by Diawa or Shimanos with penn still in there till bad reviews..

Look at the new Salina line..The reviews on them have been favorable so far...Unless you specificly want the baitrunner option

I am a proud owner of Akuma Avenger, had 3 years now, I take pretty bad care of equipment and have had no issues...
