I want give the convential type rod and reel a try for surfing fishing, what would your suggestion be for the least amount of trouble. I understand that practice with casting will be required, but I'm looking for bang for the buck and something I will not get fustrated with. I generaly use rods in the 10' to 12' range.:fishing:

What Vic said. I'm just getting into the conventional thing. I'm going with the 525 and OM rod.

I also recently dipped my thumb into the dark side.

I'm learning with a slosh30 and a 525mag. I believe either one would be good to learn on. IMHO, the slosh with red brakes is a little more forgiving with a semi-virgin thumb.

As far as rods, I'm using an OM lite and an OM heavy. They're both good rods. Which one, depends on how much weight you plan on throwing. 6+, go with the heavy. Less, go with the lite.

The first well loaded cast you successfully get off with a 525mag is a sight to behold. Big "O" city. :)

Since, as you have stated, you may get frustrated easily, maybe you should think of going into conventional in a smaller way. Try an ABU 6500 reel or a Shimano Corvalus 400, or a Tica Pieces 200. All of these reels are good reels, will cast very well, and won't cost a lot of money. If you like conventional use, you can upgrade to others if you wish. I started that way with a Daiwa SLX-S1002 rod, and since , well I still use them and others. They cast extremely well if your not trying to reach downtown London. Ask you Tackle Shop for advice too. You can be fishing with less that $200.00 investment. I am sure this will get an argument, but..! A word to the wise. When learning, tighten the spool tension knob down a little. It will hinder your cast, but eliminate backlashes. As you become more proficient, loosen the spool tension knob. It takes a few casts to get the timing right, after that, you can go for the distance if you like.

Rods: TICA or OM. In the lengths you have experience with, you'll find prices ranging from $80 -$120. Reel: look at SL20SH or SL30SH from Diawa. Lesser priced that the Abu or Penn suggested above, but good bang for the buck.

If you keep your expenditure in that $200 range, you'll get somewhat-forgiving and decent gear that doesn't break the bank.
