View Full Version : Is this a common problem with the slider-equipped 525MAG?

I took apart my 525MAG tonight, all the way apart, for the first time ever. When I bought it I never went through the process of cleaning and lightly oiling the bearings so yep, factory grease was still in 'em. I'm hoping next time I hit the field I can consistently break the 400' mark with my OM12 and an 8oz weight. Anyway.....
I took off the left side plate to get the spool out and noticed that one of the magnets had left its cavity and was sitting neatly atop another one. I guess that explains why the thing didn't slow down much even with the mags set all the way to slow. Is this a common problem, and will it hurt anything to put a dab of hot glue on the back of that magnet and stick it back in its place?

I wouldnt use hot glue. I would use crazy glue or super glue.

First, make sure that the seat where the magnet is cleaned of old glue. I use a small flathead screw driver to get out the remainder of it on mine. THen, mark the side of the magnet that is opposite in polarity to the one/s next to it. This will be your top. Add just a small drop of glue back in the hole where the magnet was and let it set for about five seconds or so. Then place the magnet back in. Give it a good press to it seats back in as deep and as level as possible. IF it is too high, it may touch your spool on lower settings.

If you are unsure about the polarity. You can pop them all out, and stick them together. They will all be stuck in a column. Put them back in opposite of how they are stuck. Like Up, DOwn, Up, Down. This reverses the polarity to +-+- or -+-+ hope it helps.

Rebel, I would do just as Firespyder suggests. I have had that occur a couple of times over the years. A more common problem is to receive a brand new reel and find the factory installation of the magnets does not alternate polarity as it should. You might have 3 negatives in a row for instance. In that case you need to reset them as FS7 suggests.

With more experience, you'll find that not all of these reels behave exactly the same after you conduct your maintenance. I spin tested the 4 of mine yesterday. I keep a record of this to see how each one compares against the baseline I set last year. This trending helps determine maintenance / tune up needs. I also use this data to match reels to rods for performance variables. For instance, my fastest reel is mounted on my best casting 2-5 ounce rod for longest range fishing and is filled with 14# Sufix Tri line. My slowest reel has 17# Sufix Tri on it and gets mounted on a 2-5 ounce rod used to fish the near shore slough.

After the next semi-annual tune up, I may find that now #3 is the fastest and adjust gear matching accordingly.

Good fishing to you and enjoy that 525 Mag -- certainly my favorite reel.

Thanks guys, I put a tiny dab of Devcon 2 5 minute epoxy in each slot after cleaning them with a tiny screwdriver and then replaced the magnets in their proper order. Haven't had a chance to cast it since then but hopefully I'll get to test 'er out in a field tomorrow.
Now if I can only figure out why my Ambassadeur 6600's pinion and main gear aren't lining up exactly right........ All the gear teeth are good, main shaft's good, spool is in good shape, nothing is bent or broken......Has to be something missing so its time to dig up a good, readable schematic on here and see what. Good thing I like messing with this stuff I reckon!

Check the orentation of parts 20664.
This is the schmatic of the abu6600.

or anyone else, what is the best way to pull the magnets out of the slot? Rag and Needle nose?

You could try some needle nose pliers. HWy do you need to pull them?

If you can get ahold of them with the needle nose, dont pull straight out. Try and twist them to break them free and they will come out.

try a bigger magnet.........

I was able to pry all but 1 of the magnets out of mine with just a little force from pliers. The one that stayed strong I didn't mess with. I'm gonna keep an eye on it and hopefully since its held up this long (almost a year of steady use) it'll be fine.
I took the 525MAG out to the field today to play with it. First cast I started easy and hit the 320 foot mark. I had the magnet turned all the way up and noticed that the thing cast alot farther with alot less effort than before. I backed the magnet off to about 3 and did another gentle cast, got another 20 or so feet and noticed the reel tried to blow up right after I released. Playing with it more I discovered this reel is wayyy too fast--uncontrollable on anything but an easy lob of a cast. Even on a relatively easy 330' lob the line would puff up near the release, and this was with the magnets turned all the way up, casting any harder led to total blow ups. Prior to the big cleaning I was tossing a little farther than this (350'+ a little), via a pendulum cast, with very little line fluff through the cast. I used a couple drops of Singer sewing machine oil on each of the bearings, so I guess I need to use something a little thicker. Anything I can get over the counter that'll slow this thing down reasonably, or am I gonna have to shell out a bit more money for the slowest Rocket offering?

Try the Penn Synthetic. I just got some and I'm liking what it is doing. The XS Is slower than this stuff. But for 5 bucks you get the oil and grease from Wal~Mart.

I read it is real thin ... like around the Yellow rocket fuel or Tourney ... not sure which but it's thin and fast ...

Try the Blue 3 in 1 oil.;)

Trying to figure out if mine are installed correctly and the only way I know to do it is to take them out. I guess If I had another earth magnet around the house I could check it that way. Any way ive put the 525 back together and felt like if I can't control it I worry about the magnets then.
(not too worried about it)

Clyde, as always not a bad suggestion. I'll give it a shot next time I rip the thing apart.
