I see all the posts about rods and reels what about the tackle that actually reaches the fish?
I talked to a gentlman at Waysons and all of his fishing has been drowning bait. He said that he had fished for years and not uses artificial baits. If the fish did not hit the live bait he pulled stakes and went home. He did not know how to use artificials.

I prefer artifical worms (texas rigged), shallow to mid diving lures and my favourite is Zara Spook.(once I learned how to walk it.)

I would think that a thread covering this would help the new comers.

I'm perhaps confused about what you mean by reaches the fish ? Yeah it's neat to see schoolie stripers charge a Zara Spook, but I can sling 8 & bait much further in the surf and cover more ground. Are you asking about freshwater fishing or salt? Boat, pier, or shore ?

Sorry for the confusion. I am talking about salt water and the types of artificial bait used in surf casting. I mostly use the rigs and live bait and wanted to know what baits (artificial ) are used.

We don't collect tackle. We just collect rods and reels :)

Shhh- don't tell my wife- still got bags of stretch 25s stored away from boating days.

That's a mighty big topic (artificials) and I'm sure there are as many favorites and varieties as there are fishermen.

I like BIG topwater lures - HEY they now have a super size Zara spook- tho it still lacks in casting distance in tough wind- for that I use metal - stingsilvers and such for blues and stripers.

I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions on this topic.

Moved from the Lounge to the Open Forum. First I've seen of that.

Around jetties and similar structure, Storms, Gotchas, bucktails with and without a grub trailer, jig with plastic like a BA.

Open water? Stingsilvers, Stingsilvers, Stingsilvers, spoons, big Gotchas, Storms (until a blue does a number on one), big topwaters, did I mention Stingsilvers?

IMHO, unless you're working structure or an active blitz, you're mostly just killing time until something hits your bait rig. :p

I used to collect tackle I still have two large tackle boxes of lures. I never wanted to get rid of them. I let step son and son in law go through and get what they wanted.

So is this a how do you rigs lures? or what do you use? Two very different questions in my book. The former depends on the running line. Braid running line I tye to a swivel then to a mono or flouro leader(2-3ft) and then most of the time direct to the lure. Mono Running line (12lb test most often) I tye a shockleader (couple of wraps on the spool)of sorts (17 lb Vanish) then direct tye to the lure. If I don't tye direct it is because either I'm changing often or tossinng a Hopkin's(no split ring) and the I use a Duo-lock.
Now for the second question I use most all of the them except spooks because I'm spook challanged. Heck I use so many bucktail jigs and jigheads with rubber that I pour my own jigheads and the the Bucktails I need. I own a good bit of plugage as well. I toss alot of Finnish minnows, the next is Mirrolures(heck I have and account).

So what was your question?
