Hello folks:
I'm new on the forum, I'm from Puerto Rico, and I like to fish from shore. Rigth now I'm using a shimano clarus 8'.6'' for salmon/steelhead rod, I can use a 1/4 to 1oz lures.
But it still too low power for me, because here I can catch tarpons, robalos, barracudas, jacks, ect.. big fish you know!!
All I want is to cast farther using a long rod with lures from 1/2oz to may be 2 oz. the problem in my decision is not get tire fast due to the weigth of the rod /reel combination. I like 10-12# line.
I was thinking in Alvey Combos, but I think they can't work good with lures.
What do you recomment to me?
thanks from puerto rico

Victor,
Bienvenidos a Pierandsurf.com!
Do you plan to puchase something locally in PR or buy something online? This may limit what you consider. What is available locally in PR?
How much $ do you want to spend? This may also change how to answer this question.
Chaucitos.

Hey Victor,
Husky is right depending on the $$$ you want that is going to make a difference between Custom or off the shelf. You have to factor in the species that you are targeting and the type of surf conditiones you are going to be fishing in . If you have rough surf you are going to need a rod that slings 6-8 oz lead, plus the bait. If you are new to surf fishing you might want to start off with the off the shelf stuff until you feel comfortable and then go after some custom equipment. We have a sponsor on the board "the bait shack" (Randy is the owner) who is incredible and has great reviews from the guys on the board. If u got any questions shoot me a PM. What part of PR do you fish San Juan, Isabela,Ponce?
YOu got some nice fishing there regards.

Not to discount the awesome service from Randy's, but I think you may like the Cabela's Fish Eagle II model GS1006. It's 10', rated 1/2- 2oz, 10-25lb. I use it for Great Lakes salmon pier casting, and have landed fish up to 25 lb on it. Only flaw is that the reel seat looks like it would need tons of attention in the salt. It's a great casting rod for the 1oz spoons I use a lot.

Don't go alvey for lures. waaaaay too slow on the retrieve and spinning gear will cast just much as far with a lure. Just con't get an alvey period
I say get a 9 foot daiwa emcast with an emcast 5000 reel, put some braid on it if you're a lure-chucker, and watch out for your fingers.:p
Or anything similiar will do for the rod and reel. Just get something 9-10 foot with a fast, tight action that can handle around 3/4-4 ounces and a reel that can hold the same or a little more than an emcast 5000

Thanks to all for answering,
I will try to answer to all;
1) I'm originaly from Cabo Rojo, Now I live in Sabana Grande, I fish in Guanica.
2) About the Alvey option, thanks for the advice, I have my doubs about the speed retrieve, but if you got one now you have confirm to me.
3) I will like to buy something in the internet, here in PR there's not good inventory, anything you can find on Walmart, Sears or in San Juan in West Marine is the only way.
4)I'm planning to spend no more than $165.00 for a combo.
5) What really take my calm is the weight of the reel rod combination, I don't want to buy something that may weigth too much and get tire after a few casts.
Remember; all the rod spec's said that they are the weigth one, but are really ligth weigth?
Also I fish only with jigs, lures all artificial!!!! No more smelly baits!!!!
Fishbait- give me this advice and sounds good what do you think?
"Cabelas carries a steelhead rod that is in the range you are talking about. It's in their tourney trail series which lists at $60 but goes on sale occasionally. It's very light. The handle is a little on the long side in my opinion, so I cut it down slightly, reducing the weight even more. Here are the ratings."
TIMSS906
9'
10-20 LB
2 pieces
handles 1/2 to 2 oz
3" foregrip
13.4" Butt

The problem this year with cabelas is the shipping, not all the rod can be shipped to PR, I try to place the order of my shimano clarus, thru them and this rod and many more they told me can't be shipped to PR.
Thanks

Your english is as good as some of ours :(
What web sites have you found that will ship a rod to PR? That will limit what combos we should suggest?
What about sellers on Ebay? Will they all ship to PR?

If you look at the forums for the sponsor - Randy's Baitshack. His website isn't really up and running for purchasing online, but he gives us great prices. You might give him a call and see if he'll ship to PR.

Victor, check out a Daiwa Tournament SS 2600 and Tica's new Dolphin line. I have an older Tica model# SC-LA 630502. It is a 2pc 10' composite rated for 1/2 to 1 1/2 oz. It will throw 2 oz. as good as any I have found. It is also light enough for long plugging sesions yet it has more fighting muscle than the typical salmon rods.
