Anyone ever fished in Thailand??? I'm leaving in a few weeks and feel obligated to wet a line there.

I'll be staying on the island of Phuket...I'll let you figure out how to pronounce it...

Any help would be appreciated...

Its pronounced POO KET. I have a friend who's family lives there. He went for a visit and went out with his uncle who was a guide. He told me all they caught were squid. He also said his uncle sliced it up and they ate it right there on the boat. Bon Appitit

Having spent some quality time in Thailand, I will say the last thing that should cross your mind is fishing.

Don't they have the Mekong Catfish there? The biggest freshwater fish?

Yes they do. They have some of the largest fresh water fish and lots of species there. I saw an awesome discovery channel show on it. Those were some beast catfish!

As a matter of fact,I read about it in the catfish insider "still have the issue." It says here that they are commonly caught by locals on dead bait such as whole chickens or dogs. Also says here when available in a open markets the fish sales for about $12 a pound. These catfish were known to get up to 700 pounds.

Yeah, I've read about them as well. There's also a freshwater lake on Phuket that has a unique specie of catfish. The IFGA world record is broken almost every year for that particular fish. I guess it's just very under fished or ignored. It would be nice to get an IFGA record under my belt!!! I might have to give it a try.

My Dad fished alot in Thailand when he was active duty. He loved it. It would be great if he could talk to you. All I need is your email adress and to let him know your going over and need advice. He went over last year.

well i cant add much too this except that they have good beer. There is a Thai food place I eat at every week. They have beer called Phuket and Singha. Sometimes I go just to buy a couple beers to bring home. Good luck on the fishing.

Being Thai myself, let me tell you to follow the old saying for going to any foreign country...

DON'T DRINK THE WATER!:--| Unless you have 3 days to waste and $$$ to shell out for Pepto, keopectate, etc.

Singha- Malt liquor or Lager..Your choice (depending on how quickly you wanna get wasted)

MarienCorpSgt is right, fishing should be the last thing on your mind. Way too many things to do.

Also, don't spit on the ground, don't throw trash on the ground. Police on corners will quickly ticket and/or jail you.

I've never been to Phuket, most of my family are in Bangkok (yeah yeah..funny names for cities)

Thanks again for all the information. Yeah, I agree, there's probably better things I could/should be doing than fishing. But, I really really love fishing...and it's a business trip and I won't have time to tour the sights. Basically, I'm going to be stuck at a resort on Phuket for 7 days. I figure I'll do a little surf fishing when I have time.

I leave on Friday...but don't get there till Sunday. I'll try and post some pics when I return.

Take a rod and reel and some tackle. If you don't , you will find out when you get there that Something Or Other is running strong and then you will have to beg, borrow, steal or worse...buy some tackle to get in on the action.

I don't know a damn thing about Thailand...but you're gonna be on an island surrounded by water. There must be SOMETHING to catch.
