Hi everyone, I am thinking about getting a new outfit to throw lures up to 3 oz. Would I be better off with a Penn 525 Mag abd a BassPro 10' Surf rod 1 to 4 oz. or a St Croix Premier 10' 3/4 to 4 oz to go with a Penn 6500 I already have. Any help you can throw my way would be greatly appreciated.

A 525 and OM 10 Lite will be a little out of balance, "over-reeled" if you will. That rod and 3 oz. won't generate enough power to make the 525 work to it's potential.

Change the reel to an Abu 5500, or even a 6500, with 3 oz...Now you're cooking with grease!!!

Any of the above reels on the OM 10 Lite will out-perform the Penn 6500 (SS Spinner, I assume...)

I have a OM10SC paired with a Abu 6500c3ct Mag. I throw 15lb test with a 30lb shock leader and 3 ounces of lead. I love this combo. Well balanced and super smooth.

One of the nice thing about a 525MAG is it can throw very light weights. Now how it balances is another story. I have had mine on amy OM 10 and it worked just fine.

X2 for using spinning tackle. I read that as using lures UP TO 3oz. I'm thinking the majority of them will be way less. Spinning tackle will allow a wider variety of weights to be thrown without having to make any changes to the reel, and you'll get better distance with extremely light stuff.

I agree with Railroader. The 525 Mag is too much reel for that application. I have used those reels a lot the past five years and don't cast anything less than 4 ounces with them.
