Reverse lock question

Just got first boat and had a problem with the reverse lock. It didn't automatically lock when we put the boat in reverse. I reached down and latched it onto the pin but now it won't unlock. I am worried that the motor will get damaged if I hit anything running in shallow water because it is locked to the transom.

Any suggestions?
