5 inch pvc from lowes and cap it
bazzoka tubs from bass pro(will take one heck of a beating)

pvc from lowes or home depot will be the cheapest and they take a hell of a beating. I drove my truck over mine leaving the beach in a rush and it didn't break. Saved a couple bucks in rods....

I have one of these and it works great, It is massive and can hold many surf rods with big guides, the lid is expandable and you can put a padlock on the lid also. the handle is nice because when I take my P-up truck I use a locking bike cable to lock it to the bed. Although nothings theif-proof it will avoid a quick walk off with the gear. And it is airline approved(although I have heard its expencive to put on a plane). I have drug it on the sand many times, no problems.

I've used the 5 inch pvc for years. I used the thinwall pvc and capped the ends with a piece of cut plywood taped on with duct tape. Before taping the plywood ends on, I lined them with soft foam. When I reach my destination, I simply take the tape off one end and fish. I then re-tape the end back on when returning home. In addition, I drilled holes in the case to prevent any heat build-up. It's simply a matter of not forgetting to take the tape along. In one case alone, I can transport6 or 7 freshwater rods...and guessing about 4 saltwater or so using both ends.

5" PVC is great. I have a Century WR 300 that was bult by Roy Allen and he makes a rod holder that is carpeted and compatmented for each half of the rod. It is threaded on one end and a cap is attached with a locking mechanism included. Very nice outfit.
