i followed the directions from http://www.bigtimefish.com/tackle/reelMagging/mag_penn114.htm and yet the reel has a tendency to blow up with 8nb, if i were to cast without any bait on the reel and just 8oz lead the reel seems to do pretty with the occassional light fluff. should i be adding more magnets or am i doing something wrong? thanks

I just put 10 magnets +-+-+-+-etc on my 113HLW, and It's not braking at all!

Such an informative post Fisher. Thanks for contributing to everyones experience here on the forum. :D

Actually, maybe I'm expecting too much from the magnets. I took them out, and the spool spins REALLY freely. With them in, there is a subtle but noticable braking. Not at all what I expected. I was hoping that it would avoid the nests that the kids make when dropping the 4/0's to the bottom. They still need a thumb on the spool.

SF is right, The braking effect is not really going to be effective on dropping straight down. Tell the kids to keep thier thumb on the spool until the lead hits bottom.
