and 16-17# main line. Are you running any shock leader? I was putting about one wrap around the reel and using a 30# shock.
So the question do you think you even need any shock leader at all with 2-3oz and a 16-17# line. Loading the rods hard from the surf.

I need a 25# shocker with 2 oz. I'll crack off anything under 20# with 2-3 oz...
Surf Fish, on the other hand, throws 5 oz. with 12' rods and 17# and never has a problem. Throws it a long way, too...;) Damndest thing I ever saw...
To each his own, I guess.
In a crowd, I'd say use a shock for safety's sake.

The rule thumb is to use 10# test for every 1oz of wieght when power casting. for fishing i typicaly use 30# and throw 4-5oz but then I do not do a true power cast.

Yeah I usually run something, like I said I have been using the 30# but was wondering what y'all thought about the subject. I know some guys around here that won't fish if you need more than 3oz.

Shock line is recommended, especially if you are fishing on a rocky bottom it will prevent brakoffs from whatever structure you are fishing
