How do you guys land spanish mackeral from a pier? Haul them up? Gaff? Net?

I usually just haul them over the side. If I should get a real big one, I'd yell for the net. Someone will bring one. If I catch a king, I'll gaff it or yell for the net depending on the size.

I just haul them up and over. Since I have never caught a king from the planks I never needed a gaff or net for the makerel

from the pier.
just haul them up and over most of the time.
Biggest I have ever caught from the pier was 3# 3ozs, if I think I have anything close to 3 1/2, 4, 5 3's and up ....bettter be searching hard for a pier net.
Although as I was discussing with my friend this past Sunday when he caught his biggest spanish from the pier at 7#'s 10ozs, it was gaffed.

Reel up the side of the pier and pray.

you know it!!! Pray hard.
"Heck, I have been out here all morning and hooked up twice, been bitten off four, five, hell I don't, done lost count and this is my first half way up and FLOP, BACK IN THE WATER!!"
Been there, done that, and failed......and went back for some more. "What wrong with me:eek:   know what I mean??"

I just haul them over the side. Just watch them hooks. I watch a guy get hook after bringing one over and ended up having go to the hospital.

You know what's funny about those hooks on the gotchas, they are sharp. I got one through my finger when I tried to pick up my Spanish and he flopped and it got me. Had to pull it myself. Make sure you have some good pliers for this.

We flip them up and over the rail in a fast motion
as opposed to just cranking them up with the reel.It takes a little practice. You don't want them to almost make it and fall back on a tight line.
I holler "incoming" and put them on the deck behind me or catch them .

Well, if you can catch a little spanish coming over the pier, then wrapping your arms around a thrashing king wouldn't be a problem.

I was live baiting a finger mullet on a size 8 or 6
2x treble last year, bent that treble up pretty good, the mack wasn't much more than about 15 inches.
