I am considering purchasing a Penn 525 Mag albeit I'm a bit confused. I have been told a new Penn 525 is available called a Penn super mag. The old Penn has a brass handle while the new one is chromed. Any clarification?
I am currently thowing an Abu 7500 Big Game and a Torium, each on 12 foot Loomis'. Am I going to get any more distance from the Penn? I can throw the Torium further than the Abu but must be extremely careful as it has no brakes. Any advise would be appreciated.

Penn 525 Mags come in 3 variations, 525 Mag, 525 Mag Xtra, and the 525 Supermag Xtra. The Xtra and Supermag Xtra are available in England or can be ordered off the web from various English tackle shops.
The regular 525 has 4 magnets that are adjusted by a slider switch on the left end cap. The Xtra is a regular 525 shipped with 2 extra magnets and 2 ABEC 5 ceramic spool bearings, all of which the buyer installs is desired. The Supermag Xtra is a different beast. It has 8 magents installed that are adjusted by knob on the left end cap. The adjustment range is greater than on the other 2 models. It also has ABEC 5 ceramic spool bearings installed. The Supermag Xtra costs almost twice as much as the regular 525 mag.
For all practical purposes, the regular 525 probably all you'll ever need.

Get the regular 525 MAG.
If you need more mag you can EASILY piggy back more magnets onto the ones that come with the real. NO glue epoxy or drilling needed. As a matter of fact all you need is a screwdriver to take the endcap off the reel and thats it.
I LOVE my 525 and just ordered another one.
