I'm trying to spool up my spinning reel with braid. I have the line tensioned so it wraps tight. The problem is that it seems the line doesn't want to spool evenly. I have a small gap at the top and bottom of the spool. Kinda like the spool isn't completely traveling up and down, although I haven't experienced this problem before.
Any thoughts?

EDIT/ADD TO THE ABOVE: My Penn Captiva CV8000 should hold well over 300yds of 12lb test. The braid I'm trying to install is 30lb test 12lb diameter. The line came on a 300yd spool and I can only get 3/4 of it on my reel? What the hell?

some reels lay braid on the spool better than others due to the way they oscilate up and down. if it tends to lay the line on either the top or bottom (not both), you can adjust the spacers on the spool shaft sometimes to correct the problem. not sure what to tell ya about yours.

as for the capacity issue, mono stretches as you spool it while braid doesnt. therefore, you aren't going to get equal capacities with equal diameters.

Spool capacity can be very missleading from reel to reel. Also braid diameter varies from maker to maker. There is no standard for braid size or reel capacity. Due to this you generaly will not get the amount on a reel you expect. You can be off plus or minus 25 yards depending on reel and braid brand.

Take the spool off the reel and find a way to manually or with some type of rotating machine like an electric drill and spool your line on that way. You will get a more even wrap and a much tigher wrap on your spool just like a line machine would do at a tackle shop.
