I was looking at a few surf rods and noticed that lower rod handle varied in length on every brand. For me the shorter handle felt more comfortable than the longer. Specifically the Ocean Master felt longer than the Emblem.

In relation to the total length of the rod, how important is the length of the lower handle or is it just a matter of comfort? Is this why some trim down the length of their rod? Thanks!

Actually the lenght of the handle is extremly important. And what is right for you will have a lot to do with your build. For example when I went to the casting seminar this past winter. Tommy took on quick look and told me that rod butt was too short(Tica) so I grabed a rod with 29inch butt and still the same. I believed we settled at about 31 inches and I'm 6'2". The lenght is used for leverage during the cast and is tucked out of the way while reeling in.

I like to be able to have my hand on the reel seat and with my arm stretched out the butt sits right in my arm pitt. That way when I'm pulling during the cast i end up with the butt in the same place every time, the middle of my chest.

Thanks for the replies... that's a nice way to check if the rod handle is too long if it extends past your arm pit. I'm short so that's probable why the shorter handle felt more comfortable.
