Just got what may be a steal of a deal on a 209. Paid two dollars and ninety eight cents on one Saturday from my favorite flea market.
Have a few questions about it.
For pier or for boat? Mono or that braid stuff? How much line will it hold? What length and action weight of a suitable rod (depending on pier or boat application)?
Thanks guys.

I have one I use when I go wreck fishing. It's caught thousands of pounds of seabass. I ues 30lb mono.
Some use it to cast from the beach or off a pier. They will mag it to slow it down or speed it up which ever.
Do a search on ththe boards you will find out more.
Good luck

I have two that i used to use for pier fishing. Had them on ten foot surf rods and 17 or 20lb mono. Smaller line gets between the spool. They were good for about 80 yards. Ive landed stripper, drum, small shark and one cobia. Good reel till I got a slosh....

Thanks guys. I will try it out from the pier....maybe for spades where I can get use to it by dropping straight down. In time I should as I get more comfortable with it, I'll try a little "short range" casting.....hopefully minus thumb burn.
I'm having trouble with my wrists....any suggestions on how to keep a rod with this type reel from doing an automatic flip over other than having to rest it on the railing?
Thanks again.

To prevenmt a rod from flipping over, wrap it a la spiral wrap. An easy spiral wrap conversion on a two piec rod is to just turn the tip over to put he guides on the bottom. The guide(s) on the butt will still be on top of the rod. You can reorient the second guide to provide a transition. This is called a one-guide transition spiral wrap. It is called a 'simple spiral' in some circles.
All of my conventional rods, including surf rods are spiral wrapped with a two or three guide transition. C2

I currently use a 209 with 30 lb line for snook and reds on a pier. I have it on an old 6' penn long beach and it feels pretty solid. I've taken it on party boats for snapper and gag grouper and it works well too
