Does anyone have any experience shipping fishing rods? I just sold one on Ebay and I am trying to figure out the best wat to ship a 7' one piece Med. Action bass rod. I know some have used PVC but I am trying to not pay an arm and a leg on shipping. Its only going to GA from MD. Anyone have any suggestions and where to get packing Materials? Thanks guys

Go to a sporting goods store or tackle shop and see if they will give you one of the cardboard tubes that the rods are shipped in from the factory.

The distance covered means nothing...it can be busted at your local post office. If it DOES get busted, you have to refund your buyer, and you're out the cash for the rod, plus shipping.

Put it in a PVC tube(probably get a scrap or cracked piece real cheap), wrapped tightly in bubble wrap. Make sure to mark it FRAGILE in BIG letters.

Be sure to insured for TWICE what you sold it for. That way if broken, you can refund the buyers money and you get what you would for having sold the rod. Otherwise, you get a postal refund, then refund the buyer and you are out a rod.

If it's a bass rod, the guides are not large right? Put it in a PVC tube just long enough to take the rod with some padding at each end and take it to the post office. It'll cost you about $15-20. I've sold and shipped a couple of 7 1/2 and 8 foot casting rods with no issues. You might run into some "oversize" issues if it's a spinning rod which requires a larger diameter tube. You won't pay any more to ship in PVC than in a cardboard tube.
Don't go to one of those "mail express" joints. They'll stick you.

I couldn't edit my post in time so here's just a little more info...
You can send packages up to 108 inches (combined girth & length) via priority mail.
A piece of 2" PVC long enough for a 7 foot bass rod falls well within that range. Just for the heck of it, I checked the price of shipping an 86 inch piece from east coast to west on the USPS website, the cost is $15.85
Man I gotta getta life...

As a seller on ebay , Let me offer you this advice on insurance from the USPS.... In order to make a claim on insurance , you have to provide the Post Office a receit of the item showing the cost or value . AND THEY DO NOT ACCEPT A EBAY TRANSACTION AS A RECEIT!! Alot of people dont know this who sell on ebay and waste alot of money on insurance that they wouldnt even be able to get back anyway. Im not sure what the Policy is for other shipping companies like UPS or FED EX. Hope this helps ....D

I go along with SALTSHAKER... I RECENTLY WENT TO A CARPET STORE & THEY WERE HAPPY TO GIVE ME A CARDBOARD ROLL(HEAVY DUTY). I WRAPPED THE ROD IN SOME BUBBLE PAPER & TAPED UP BOTH ENDS. SHIPPED A 2 PC. 13' ROD UPS, FROM N.Y.TO CHARLOTTE FOR $20.00. JUST MY 2CTS. LIGHTER THAN PVC.

If this were possible, ( it's not ) it would be a very profitable scam.
It sounds good up front, but lets add it up.
You sell the rod and get paid by the buyer.
You're out 1 rod, and you got paid 1 time.
But if the Shipper pays you double, and the Buyer has paid you also, now you are out 1 rod, you refund the Buyer his money, and you've still got the double payment from the Shipper.
Good work if you can get it, but don't quit your day job just yet. :D

You can pick up a length of "light weight" rain gutter down spout at Lowes or Home Depot for cheap. It's rectangular and made out of PVC. Its strong and works real well.
PVC pipe is just too heavy to use and costs more than it's worth.

Ok here is what I did not seeing the posts above b4 about the carpet tubes. I read the one and decided to break down and send it in PVC. Went to home depot and was in the pipe isle. Well after I would have bought the tube and endcaps it would have been about 10 bucks. Well I was talking to the guy in the isle and he said that I could go see what the carpet guys had. So I went over to the ilse where they have lamite flooring and carpet. Asked the guy and he said he had 2 that he could give me but they were on the big machine that holds about 8 differnt carpets. He told me he was going to write my name on them and I could come get them later if that was ok with me. Well he asked what I was using them for and turns out he is a fellow fisherman and got one for me right away. it was cool b/c we bullsh*ted about fishing for the next half an hour. So thanks for all the help guys. PS those carpet rolls are stong as hell. I could stand on it with it it giving!
