For all the places you don't already have a report-forum for.
Glad I found you, I'd like to improve my distance casting and it appears this is a good place for that.
My set up?
Lamiglas 10' 2-pc "XS 10 MHC" with a Blue Yonder reel, spooled in 20# cajun line and an 8' floro leader, I catch perch, halibut, croaker, and hopefully soon corbina and various sharks, all from the beach.
We like Berkely Gulp!, especially camo sand worm, we call that stuff 'fishcrack" cause it's like crack for fish.
We also have an abundance of flyfishermen working the surf too.
We have a pretty good thing going, we even have a good forum called SoCal Surf Fishing (http://www.scsurffishing.com/), so if you don't want to make a new board here for us,that's OK. No one would probably post on it anyway. But I am glad to find a forum specifically for distance casting, much appreciated.

Just curious, how do you get away with such a short shock leader? I let the shock leader wrap around the reel spool a few times to carry the weight of the sinker/rig.
I'm not trying to be an a$$ just wondering if I'm missing out on a West Coast trick.
Welcome to the asylum.

Welcome aboard.
Most of the techniques that work here will work there or just about anywhere

Not trying to discourage you from distance casting but I think for the most part corvina feed right up against the beach. I've seen them literally 2' from the edge on calm days. Of course there is a whole lot about west coast fishing I don't know. Just my understanding that you target them basicaly at your feet on sandy beaches. Anyhow welcome to the site and good luck.

I don't know about corvina, we do get some around here but I haven't targeted them yet. I don't know for sure what type of water they hang out in.
But corbina, that's the holy grail for a lot of folks out here. They do cruise the skinny water, and you don't need to cast far for them. I'm still working on getting my first one, but yes for them it's not so important to cast far as to do everything else just right.
As far as a shock leader, I don't use one. Just #20-lb mono to a long #10 floroucarbon leader, maybe 10' or so, tied on with a bloodknot so there's no need for a swivel. When I target sharks I'll use something heavier-duty.
I'm usually either drop-shotting or using a carolina rig.
Happy 4th everyone. The frikken beaches are so crowded right now, good luck getting parked and out to the surf anywhere around here today.

power areo; they are not throwing much weight
drop shotting is less than a ounce i believe

That is a great light bait chunking set-up that u should be able to get good distance with 4-6oz and bait, but not an "ultimate" distance set-up b/c of the length, but it's the exact sort of set-up that I enjoy fishing the most. In terms of equipment definitely drop down in main line test, at least to 17# and maybe even 14# sufix....17# if u're fishing rocky structure. Start off with a hatteras cast or unitech which are simple casts to learn. If u're using a 10# leader then there is no reason not to drop down to 14# main line.
If u're using under 3 oz....this set-up is not ideal if u want distance.....it's not really going to load.....u'll want something more like medium action.

Actually I screwed up when I said #20, I'm using 17# cajun line.
I was looking for #20, but ended up getting the #17.
And yes, most people fishing the surf here use 1-1/2 oz max, usually under an oz.
Among the most popular (and productive) lures are "lucky craft" lures weighing under an oz.
Today a guy caught several legal (22" min) halibut using a 1/2 oz. KastMaster.
They're calling it "the light-line revolution". Seriously, with a #10 leader I'm in the minority, most people use #6 max.
I use about 2-3 oz plus bait, my rod is rated 3-8 oz, and in my ignorance I've found 2 oz + bait works OK. Now that I'm on the right track to learn proper casting, I may find different.
I may also find I need a different rod, rated for the light-line techniques so successful here. My 10' Lamiglas is rated "mod" so I guess that is a medium action.
Sounds like I should be upping the leader size accordingly, to perform these casting techniques.
Now I just need to learn these techniques, man I don't even know where to start.
