We really need to get the nets out of the water. I don't care who says what.....ALL nets are a problem.
I thought that the reason WE have to buy a fishing license now was to help get some of the nets gone.....???? Was that not one of the reasons for the license????

If we are going to have any fish in our future, this has to stop. Why is NC the only state that doesn't see the problem?

tight lines.....and let everyone you can see this.

NC (and VA, MD and DE) need to follow Florida's lead on a complete ban of gill nets in state waters (out to three miles). Even the little bait catching thingys that were a small strip of netting and a red ribbon used to catch threadfin herring were outlawed. This was all done back in the mid 1990's and the change was amazing. Within 3 years, people were catching more and larger spanish mackeral and pompano than ever before. The spanish mackeral population rebounded so well that the limit was raised from 10/person/day to 15/person/day at 12".

Wow,a whole 35 bucks. That is bound to make those netters act right.I bet enforecement officers are really after these guys so they can bring in more of those big fines. All this really shows is that the agency doesn't care about
the resource.

I'll bet it is not the agency, but the lawmakers, judges and politicians that don't care about the resource. Recreational fishermen in NC need to rise up and be counted, or your resource will disappear. The agency will police the laws which are passed. You can be sure the netters (commerical / recreational) won't police themselves.

Between the Piping Plover zealots and the renegade netters, you boys are in a fight.

Heck show that to those piping plover lovers and PETA and maybe they will go after those gill netters and leave us surf fishermen alone for a little while. Hell maybe then we can be on thier side of an issue for a change

Paully,
License has only been in place for 1/2 year. Don't expect miracles. Write to some of your state reps and let them know how you feel. Let them know that if things don't change, you can choose to take your fishing trips and money to SC or VA. If you live in Reidsville, your reps should be as follows:

Phil Berger - State Senate
philbe@ncleg.net

Nelson Cole - State House Rep

NO!! I DON'T EXPECT MIRACLES......BUT I DID THINK IT WOULD CAUSE A LITTLE MORE CONCERN, HERE ON THIS BOARD, THAN IT DID!!

I did express my concerns to my reps. along with members of the NC Fisheries Dept., members of the CCA, NC Game and Fish, and also copied a few members at the HQ for the IGFA (just to help stir the pot).

WHAT DID YOU DO???? Other than be a smart a$$ and firing back at me with the obvious.
How dare you tell my that I should call someone and "don't expect miracles"!!!

I don't get it. I really thought that the members of this forum were truly concerned about the fisheries we fish and took pride in the fact that we are conservation minded sportsmen. Judging by the lack of reply/discussion/action taken on this topic.....I really wonder about that now.

I don't mean this as an across the board slam. There are several folks here that are true fishermen in every sense. You guys are well....a cut above the rest. Guys like DD, Ryan (Firesypder), Clyde, Railroader, RuddeDogg, and a few others. Folks who care about fishing not just use this as a bragging board.

I'm sick of the lack of support here. Everbody is always griping.....and not doing anything to fix the problem, or giving "advise" as to what you should do.

I don't respond/reply much here, only if I think it will matter or help someone (another reason I thought this board was for) so I don't think I'll be missed.
I'M GONE!!

tight lines to all you real fishermen....to those who just brag here...:--|

From your initial post you didn't explain anything that you did- just looked like a bitch and complain without any direction giving on your part.

If I want someone to do "something" it helps to clue them in to what you want them to do.[QUOTE]who WILL stop this

stillsearchin responded aprropriately and you bite his head off?

How was anyone to know what you did, since you never stated it.

Your right, if that's how your going to treat folks- you won't be missed.

Contact the Florida CCA and get all the info you can on how they started their Public Intiative Drive to get a net ban on the ballot for amending the state constitution.
Present this to your local CCA and find out how this would work in your state.
Present a copy to PETA as sworn enemies sometimes make good alies.
Personaly get involved with groups that support the idea as without your help they can not get anything done.
Vent your anger with the powers that be (Politicians)as the only thing you can get from a bulletin board is info that you request or search for and a very small sampling of our opinions.

I feel as though I have just given a lecture to one of my kids who also feel that everyone else should take the action and that the Initiative to start something that they find dear to their hearts is the responsability of others.

Paully have a cup of coffee and a smoke and cool off.... and a
The change I hear about with net ban has been crucial to the rebound of Fla fisheries. Your right Paully is it time for a change and a need to manage the resource for future generations. As fisherman we should keep our resource clean and not over fished, not by us but the commercial industries. When I was in Michigan my Dad and I helped with TU and worked weekends keeping our stream in Michigan clean and built log jams for the fish. Rewards were I knew about big holes and felt better helping out. We all should help out and teach our kids the importance of our resources.

I second that last sentence. I watched the video and shared the issue with several fishermen I know, but didn't think I needed to post a reply just to make Paully feel better. Paully, don't let the door hit ya on the way out!

Paully my reply about showing that video to the piping plover lovers and PETA although a little tounge and cheek was a suggestion that could help greatly. PETA gets a hold of something like that and they will be all over the gill net fishermen. Let them help your cause. Sometimes fighting the good fight makes for strange bed fellows. So stop complaining on here and take some action yourself. Forward that video to some of those special interest groups. Yes some of us have passed the video along but I have to agree with surf cat

Paully,
Sorry you took my post the wrong way. As for what I have done, I wrote to my legislative reps and expressed my viewpoint and asked for their support when voting on future bills. By suggesting you might do the same I didn't realize I was being insulting. I can see you are very passionate about the issue and I think that is a good thing. I understand there are folks on these boards that already know everything, I just didn't realize you were one of them. Sorry if my input came accross as condescending.

StillSearchin....

First of all, I want to send you my most humble apologies and amvery sorry for blowing up.....I honestly meant nothing towards you, or any one on this board, that would be disrespectful or rude.
Although I know in my half twisted mind what I was trying to convey...it obviously did not come out that way.
So please forgive my outburst, along with my lack of "writing to communicate" skills.

Yes, in a way I was venting, though it came out WRONG.
Honestly I was a bit disappointed that no more was said on the net ban topic then what was said. I guess I was hoping for this big rally of everyone here and an uprising that said "WE WILL BE HEARD!". I just wanted to know that this was on everyone's hearts and minds, and that I wasn't the only one ready to fight about this. With that said, I know reality works a bit differently.
I know that there are a lot of strong feelings from everyone here about our fisheries, and that when it really comes down to a "fight".....this group will stand shoulder to shoulder, and will "bring it".

As I thought about this last night, realizing how wrong this read, I couldn't help but think of the bad taste it left in my mouth. I could only wish to forget the thought of what you guys felt.
"Here's a guy that is usually quiet, now this nut-case is blasting at us?"
I think in some way I really wanted to know what would get folks here fired-up and "take the gloves off". Failing to realize that I already knew the answer to that question. Out bursts towards individuals or at the group, blatant disregard for our beaches, waters, or fish, and just bad manners......
This is a tight group, though we may not "know" everybody here. Sometimes one of us will get a little out of line and/or say or do something stupid. Sometimes we do not always agree or see things the same. BUT, we all have the same goals, and we are all family.
We are all fishermen.

Again, my utmost apologies to StillSearchin, and any one else I have offended, for my temporary stupidity and bad judgment.

you people are talking a buckett of sand here. yes any nets stopped is a plus for the fisheries. but as I have warned before ,by the year 2047 there will only be 19 % of all the fish in the oceans that there is today. the massive drift nets and a whole list of tech. is making it easier tocatch massive amounts of fish . the first place its going to show up is in the 3 mi. fisheries (thats Us) so :work to ban any nets that you can.But think of the big picture also. Look what we done in lake Erie when we took all nets out of the lake for walleye.( At least on the American side) GREATEST walleye fishing in the world. Keep your battle going to stop netting where you can. I do alot of letter writing even if it falls on deaf ears. old wise bison

Paully, i gotta ask you ONE simple question..

Have you ever bought fresh bunker/cobb mullet for bait?
