I have a nib penn 6500ss that should match with your rod. The 8500 is big and heavy.

I think uglysticks were and are a great rod..
Just a little outdated, and heavy... I still have two four ft ultralights.. Those rods caught fish up to twenty lbs with four lb test, and were steadily abused... My son has them now,one of them needs a tip,but he's still catching bluegills and bass with both.. I really have nothing bad to say about an uglystick...

uglysticks are great rods for the money:) . they are the most forgiving to abuse of all rods-compared to the high ends g.loomis, lamiglas etc...
uglysticks are the only good thing that shakespeare ever did as a company.......................
shutting down the allstar surf blank productions...:--| IDIOTS!

Good luck finding the Okuma....they appearantly do not make them anymore. A Tica Dolphin SE8 9 or 10000 is comparable in price and has a better reputation...they are hard to find but I found a dealer that has them in stock just PM me and I will let you know...

I am quite surprised noone asked you where you are going to be fishing, what rigs are you planning to use, what species are you targeting, are you going to be using live bait or dead bait? In other words what do you want to achieve? The Ahab is a huge reel for really big fish (Sharks). Okuma (I just don't like there site, really not user friendly) Quantum, I don't think they are designed for Surf if that's what you are looking at. Daiwa, Penn, and Shimano have excellent lines of reels. If Surf Daiwa Emcast (lightweight, long spool), Penn Slammers, Tica has a good line. I can get more specific with more info. Hope I can help! Remember we all have our OPINIONS and preferences, based on our experiences and what we like.

HellRhay,we'll have to agree to disagree on this one... Shakespeare made a spinning reel that was (in it's day the BEST,imho).. The sigma series,050 was the one I used..$14.99,back in the day.. :D Had an excellent drag, little bit slow on gear ratio, but all of them were back then.. Caught many a fish with that reel, still have it.. It could use a rebuild, but no parts.. :(
Lasted over ten yrs with me puttin the boots to it the whole time, fishing 3 and 4 days a week, boat, pier, and surf.. Sad part about this reel is they subbed it to another manufactuer in Fla.. Hurricane.. All the durability of that reel went down hill fast, and they stopped production alltogether.. BUT,like I said, best of the best in it's day.. :)
So,I guess they did 2 good things... :D
