mostly interchangeable terms- more freshwater fishermen use the term "bait caster" to distinguish it apart from a spinning or spin cast reel.

When I hear the term conventional I also tend to think more in terms of larger, non-level wind reels vs level wind (bait caster) reels, tho that may be an incorrect interpretation on my part.

Just another term to add confusion....

the UK guys call them "multipliers".

a bait caster throws bait or lures.
a conventional freespools bait or lures to the bottem.
a multiplier only works on english rods.

Their are only two basic reel catagory types. Spinning and Conventional. Conventional has many sub catagorys ie: offshore, bay, baitcaster, fly, etc.
So, a baitcaster is just one catagory of conventional reels.

I see baitcasters as the reels that throw light lures (for like freshwater bass).

Conventionals are reels designed to sling lead or large lures.
