with the homemade version, but I bought (actually wife bought :D ) a new barrel grill this summer that is pretty well thought out. The Food Lion stores have been selling them, they have a Kingsford logo, tho not sure who actually manufactures them.
I am assuming charcoal grill here?
My old barrel grill which lasted well over 15 years was just beyond salvaging so the new one was picked up a couple weeks ago. This thing really is well designed- removable charcoal/ash grate that makes clean up and disposal a snap- easily adjusts height of charcoal distance from food, heavy duty food grates, warming rack, thermometer included.
Not trying to talk you out of a do it yourself project, but I'd at least sneak a peek at one of these for design ideas.
Good Luck

About 14 years ago I built a BBQ out of a 55 gal drum. We cook around 100 hams twice a year at church for a pig picking. Local hunters bring all sorts of things to cook while the pig is cooking.
We decided against putting wild game in with the rest of the pigs so I built a cooker. We cook with coals from hardwood slabs. We have cooked, wild boar, coon, rabbit, snake, deer. In this thing. It works great with coals but you would have to lay a flat piece of steel in the bottom to get the charcoal closer to the meat. We use coal and fire it every 30 minutes until it gets going and then fire it every hour when the heat reaches cooking temp.
It works great.

Log onto this site and enter hvac81 as the user name and smoker as the password. A guy that works for me built this and I have seen it in action (WOW!!!). It has a Carrier control system on it that allows him temperature contol of no more tan 3 degrees deviation. It has electronically actuated openers for the lid, and alot of other options.
