I have a Green Penn 706 spinning reel that is in mint condition.I bought it about 30 years ago.Can anyone tell me of a good rod to match it with or should I just retire it?

Go ahead and use it. I am using my 704 and it does great. Simple and easy to take care of.

I believe if I found a mint one it'd be a collectors item. Search it under the completed listings on ebay and you'll see why.

They are very popular among the striper fishermen in the NE. Many pack them with heavy grease and dunk them in the surf while chasing striper's. Then clean and repack for the next trip(very simple to work on). Most have them on 11 foot plugging rods.
they are nicknamed coffeegrinders.

Very popular here in the Gulf.

That could be just the NE folks moving south.

Nope been here 30+ years and still use mine every now and then when I need something that can get dunked. wile far from ment condition it is still reliable.
if it is one with a manual pick up than even beter. holds a lot of line and no aluminum gears so even if it does freeze up it can just be carfully taken apart ,cleane dand is back in action
I have tried for years to kill it but can't and will take on small to medium sharks.
by the way if you do manage to break the handle, the newer modles fit,
