Going over the fishing regs as I often do I saw that 'snagging' is illegal. What IS snagging? The illegal version which has to do with fishing that is, I know all about snagging my rig on rocks and stuff.

When the steelhead run up in Michigan some people put on a over sized treble hook and just rip it across the river/dam and try to "Gaff" or Snag the fish. Happens every year.

Believe it was along Mississippi and Misouri River they have a Spoon Bill Cat fish and snagging is legal as they cant ,wont bite conventional hook, these fish get pretty good size also, can you just imagine a 20Lb hooked in the tail.

i always wondered about this myself we often snag bunker when they run through for bait. i believe snagging of gamefish is illegal, but baitfish such as bunker are not a protected fish. might be wrong but dont see why it would matter that fisherman snag a few for bait when commercial fisherman slay 'em and take the gamefishes food source!

In Micigan it is rampant...big salmon run up these little rivers an guys set rods with #80 and 10 15/0 hooks...and snag what they can...IMHO...you catch a spot in the cheek, keep it...
People do it here ,at the dam on the wateree river ,catch big catfish up there .Its legal as long as you don't keep any game fish ,unless they have changed the law.:fishing::fishing:
