I don't know anything about that Shimano - but I wouldn't buy anything with the word Okuma and expect it to last. Here's are a couple good reels:

Daiwa Emcast

I just bought a Daiwa Emcast Pro 5000 for $80 @ BPS... I haven't gotten to use it yet but from what I hear, its a fantastic reel...

I'd go Solstace, aluminum frame and A-RB bearings for dirt cheap, can't go wrong.

I want a light tackle setup for off the piers and off jetties
but off the surf for the most part.

If memory serves me right, the Solstace is a freshwater reel (quickfire trigger is a dead giveaway).

If you want a Shimano reel, look for a sahara 6000 (although discontinued, you may find it on fleaBay) or throw in some more $$ and get the Spheros 8000, the 4000 size shimmies does not have the line capacity if you want use it for surf fishing. I use the sahara 4000 for catching spots on a 7ft daiwa rod.

I would go with the Diawa emcast sport over the okuma avenger. It feels pretty solid for that $59 price range and line capacity. For surf fishing, I would only consider okuma (or any brand) only if they are aluminum bodied.

my 2 cents

I must have been mentally out of it earlier... yeah I meant Emcast Plus and I didn't buy it at BPS... I bought it at a local tackle store near my work... lol

srx788... shimano baitrunner 3500B is $100. I totally respect one's limits.. Lord knows how I want a zippy, for the difference of $40, you cannot beat the shimano baitrunner in that ballpark of spinners. JMHO. Best of Luck, Stevie:fishing:

Have the schimano 6500 b and the okuma 65 bait runner. Like both reels and they both perform very well. Okuma in my opinion has come a long way. You can look at their V series and am sure you will be surpized...

the problem with what he is looking for is: he wants a light set-up that can do surf fishing:confused:. for light fishing, reels are in the 3000-4000 range, and these reels just wouldn't do in the surf, there's not enough line capacity. for the surf you must go with the heavier reels, for line cap and fighting power.

it's just like looking for a rod that can throw 1/2 ounce but can also throw 8ounce. just wouldnt happen.

im going to use fireline so i really dont need the capacity on the spool
