View Full Version : Need good distance caster (on med. weight)

Hi all - been thinking about purchasing a new rod/reel setup.

As of right now, I own several spinning setups (well, MANY if you count my "smaller" bass setups for ponds/lakes, etc) that include two med. duty spinners and one heavy setup (Penn 950SS with OM 8-12oz).

The distance I am getting out of my med. duty rigs leaves me with the plenty of room for improvement. My form is fairly strong and I believe my limitations are simply a product of the setup (being limited by a spinning reel, line weight, etc). They serve their purpose well but I am looking for greater distance.

As such, I am thinking a conventional setup is the way to go. I fished along a kid who MAY have weighed 160lbs soaking wet and he was easily outcasting me by close to 50% (similar weight/bait, etc). I am 6'5" and about 265lb and like I said, my form is pretty good (by far not an expert) so it was my opinion (and was confirmed in my readings) that it was the conventional giving him that distance.

Being a Penn fan (for no reason other then having success with them in the past), I am thinking about the 525.

I need/want to cast 3-6oz plus some bait (cut bait, etc) with some good distance to reach some farther holes (or over some breakers). Would probably go with a 15-30 lb line (braid or mono if it makes no difference).

Money IS an issue but if I am going to spend - I would make the reel priority. Knowing the Penn runs about $125, I want to air on the "cheaper" side with the rod ...... just something capable in what I need it to do for the time being. A better rod would be an upgrade down the road. It would have to be able to handle decent size blues and/or stripers.

So my questions (finally right?): Is the Penn 525 a good choice for what I am looking for? If not, what do I need to look at? What would be a budget rod to get me started?

Thanks in advance.

Will

but since you said money is an issue, you may want to consider the Daiwa SHA reels as well. I am a beginning conventional user, have both an SHA 30 and a 525, and for me, they work equally well. YMMV

Is there much of a price difference between the two? I am partial to Penn only due to my experiences with them. I don't have any experiences with Diawa and they certainly are not ruled out.

the Diawa is a lot cheaper reel but still casts well...

I'd like to know where you find the Knowing the Penn runs about $125 reels... anywhere I've checked they're right up around $145...

When I glanced through a website - I thought that was the price that was listed, however, I can't find it again and now I am finding prices more in line with what you are saying.

Worst thing though is that the local fishing shack down here doesn't carry either in stock. Basspro is too much of a hike to make today.

The BPS in Hanover only has the 525 in stock. The Slosh appears to only be through their website right now.

A couple of questions first:

What rods and reels are you currently casting with right now? What line/leader/weight combination are you running? What type of cast?

The reason I ask these questions is that it will be far cheaper to maximize your current equipment (provided you're willing to put in some work) than it is buying a new combo, especially if you're going from spinning to conventional.

From your description, it sounds like you have an OM 12' Heavy with a Penn 9500, correct? What are your two medium duty spinners? For the OM12H/9500, you should be running 17-20lb line, 60lb shock leader and 6-8oz of weight. A nice, smooth overhead thump should net you at least 85 yards, if not more. 130 yards is not out of reach with that combo.

I can think of three real fast that will fit what your looking for size wise and money wise ....

Tica, Tsumani, and Okuma Solaris .... all great for throwing 4-6 oz and are under $100 ... Randy's Baitshack is a sponsor and has great deals ...

Abu's 6500 also fit all these reels very nice too ... sweet reels and throw a mile

I would buy the 525 mag (you can't buy a better all around surf reel). Then buy an OM with the specs you want.

After you master that, sell the OM to Atlantaking and put 525 mag on a fancy custom rod...

AK, you wanna do some fw bass fishing this weekend? boat is getting worked on and I needed to follow through on many promises to others during Aug/Sept.

Oh yea, Hannibal, you could also get a tica, tsunami or penn rod...not just the OM for a starter...in fact you might never need to upgrade those rods. to each his own.
