I am heading down to Portsmouth Island Oct 12-15. I see so many pictures of guys wearing waders when they surf fish. Will I need waders? I know some of it has to do with air and water temps.
Is it because they are walking way out to make a longer cast. Is it necessary to make a cast that far? Can one cast it far enough just standing in say knee deep. I have not surf fished there before and have always surf fished in areas where I can usually cast far enough just getting knee deep. How far out do most people wade out before casting? Thanks for any advice.

Some of the drum fisherman where them when they wade out to a bar or fishing places like "the point" in buxton or somewhere where youre generally getting splashed. Suite yourself as far as that goes. Once I bought a set of breathables, I havent gone without them

All depends on weather. Most nice warm fall days, don’t need them. Once the sun starts to set it gets chilly if you are wet and they come out and go on. Even some warm fall days I wear them if it is windy. I always pack them and have them handy, spring, summer, fall and winter. It’s hard to have the option on putting them on if you don’t bring them.

I always bring them... even at thanksgiving I will wet wade during the day depending on temps, and wear the waders when fishing the night tide.

However...i'm used to the colder temps being from Ohio

get a good dry top to go over the waders and a belt to cinch it all down if you're gonna be wading deep...

what happened with the gas main break on US 15 last week... I was heading north and got caught up in that mess... made for a BIG detour and 2 hours added to the trip...

The gas main was hit by some construction folks.
2 days before they knocked out the cable. People were more destraught about not having TV than not having hot water. Go figure. If you ever need help with thraffic in that area shoot me a PM

lolol I can believe that... I found a good way around, a bit scenic and slow but it got me back on 15 way north of Haymarket...

Wore my waders Thursday night at Calo. Needed them, but it did not help me catch any fishes, have not seen a drum since June!!

I plan on surf fishing at OI near the middle of OCT. I only get to surf fish once a year. If I wanted to buy waders but not break the bank, what would you buy? How do you know what size to order, I am 6/2 w/ 36" waist. Thanks

I waited until I could go and try some on before buying a pair. Really hard to know exactly how they will fit by looking at pictures or sizes. I was lucky enough to be on a business trip to Kansas City and drove by Cabela’s on the way to the meeting. Yup, left a couple hours early and shopped before going to the airport. Evil place. I went in for waders and left $500 lighter.

I got the dry plus, premium or something like that, $150.00 with the lace up boot foot. I love the extra room in the ankle to get them on/off with! 3rd season now and no complaints at all. They have other breathables in the $100 range but would recommend trying them on before buying. Have you looked at any of your local sports shops?
