DISCLAIMER:Not in the market right now so this is just for pure fun (for those "Use the search function"er's ;) lol) and yes I know different rods fit different casting styles

With the heaver market ever changing on an almost daily basis. What's your favorite heaver?

We'll put this in two catagories:

A- Favorite heaver that will handle 10n bait (b/c conditions are quite often less than favorable.........used for spiking, holding, etc)

B- "The Point" rod, the 8n bait rod you grab when youre at the point, or holding the rod for extended periods of time

Since I only have one custom heaver, and I havent even fished it yet (picking it up Oct 13 at Hatteras Jack....Fusion Magnum)

A- OM Heavy
B- Penn Pro Guide 12'

No candidates for group A. I don't get the opportunity to fish the OBX and the "point" often, but when there I use my Breakaway 1508 two piece / one piece built by Dogshark several years back. That same rod serves as my surf sharking rod here in NE Florida.

When the weather churns up the surf here, we can get by with a 6 ounce rod as our local heavers.

a trend toward WRI here

A. Fusion Magnum- tho I won't toss 10 unless absolutely necessary

B. The standard Fusion- with the new 7 Dust drawing a close second- especially if I can get by with 6 & bait.

Surf Cat, thats one of the reasons I was asking. Seems most of the guys up north love the Lami's, the "RDT crew" love the Lami's and Daiwa Ballistics, Then you have the primarily (or seemingly) WRI/AFAW/RS/AS P&S crew with a BA thrown in here and there.

to see how different areas/ sections of the coast have their preferences.

As far as RDT- they build most if not all their heavers on lami's- I own one and it's a good rod, but pretty much designated as my back up any more.

The RS 1508/1509 used to be king, but heavy and tough to load compared to some of the newer stuff.

I'm in the process of building my first AFAW- an estuary- not a heaver, but I'll get to see how it stacks up to some of the best plugging rods in the business next week in Montauk.

Hope to give a review and with any luck a fishing report when I get back.

I know this will sound like a shamless plug but here goes anyway...lol

Before you buy a heaver, do yourself a favor and try as many as possible. What works GREAT for one guy may not be best for you. Some like stiff rods that will cast a brick, some like rods that will bend but still deliver the goods.

I've pretty much tried them all, the AFAW Beach gives the best combination of casting performance, ease of loading and fishability that I have personally fished.

So much for scenario A and scenario B

Tommy...shameless plug? nah...besides, youre a board sponsor and beyond that, you contribute mounds of priceless information and videos...sponsor or not, wouldnt hurt my feelings if you put in a plug or not ;).

Might have meet up with Ron since he's a little closer and try the AFAW rods. Like I said though, Im not in the market, but just curious as to what people like this day in age.

Well, right now, since I have only casted the AFAW, I can't say I've fished it so its out of the category but that will soon change cause it throws a TON and has a nice feel. Of the rods I have fished with, I like:

A. Fusion
B. 1418 (although I only throw 6nbait with it)

Now, when, not if but WHEN I get that AFAW, it'll be right up there...JMO

Then there's that Beach model that Tommy refered to in his "shameless plug". I've held the blank and that has to be my next purchase before I head back to OBX in the late spring. Yep the best one is the one you don't have yet. No question about it. Philly Jack

just you remember the blank you held will be heading south when it's built... :D

that along with a 12' Loomis and a 12ft Lamiglas will comprise my heavy arsenal along with an OM Cape Point and a 12" Tsunami as back up's or loaners...

Lamiglass 1362M. But I cant throw 10 or 8 and bait. I throw 5 or 6 and bait only. This rod is new to me and I'm trying to get use to it.

So far I only have 1 Heaver, a St. Croix Avid Surf ASRS110H2 rated at 4 - 12. It's a new rod and I'm still trying to get in tune with it.

I need to check out some of those high speed, low drag rods the rest of you guys are talking about for my next rod.

An original OM ordered from the designer when they first came out, butt has been extended 5". It will throw 6oz through 12oz as far as you can throw. If I need 14oz I'll just watch.

HDX at the full 13' with a reel seat added. A great rod and my go to when fishing one rod.
It doesn't like 6oz but has no problem throwing 8oz thru 14oz again tho If I need 14oz I'll just watch.

12' Tica for 6oz lures and fishfinder, mainly a Striper or Puppy rod.

All are conventional :fishing:
