View Full Version : cape point or the cork handle 6 to 12 oz
Need some advise!!! Have a 525 mag with out a rod so thought I would pick one up this week. Money is tight so the Gloomis is out of the question. Read alot where you guys talk about the cape point so whats the differance between it and the cork version rated 6 to 12 oz?? I noticed at BPS there is no grip on the cape point is that the only differance other than the seats? Any and all info would be helpful guys thanks!! :fishing:

I use the regular OM12 for biter duty and I love that rod... I can put some heat on a running toothy and get the job done pretty good. OM12 w/ 50sha & filled with around 650yds of PP/mono. Aint much I cant stop from the beach on it. Gave it a good test on atomic flounders this summer:D damn good times

Both rods are built on the exact same blank. The Cape point special was BPS's response to comments that the regular OM heavy was too heavy. I forget how much weight they shaved off by canging the reel seat & removing the grip wrap. There have been mixed reviews on the CPS reel seat. I personally have 2 of the standard OM heavys and really like them.

To keep weight down on the OM cape point- you can add heat shrink to protrect the handle instead of cork tape- it help keep the weight and diameter of the butt down- so that is another option- tho more expensive than cork tape.
I didn't care for the reel seat on the cape point- .
Sold it recently, unless you need the ability to toss 10 and bait check out the Tsunami's.
Not bad either and of course TICA is out there, but niether is as "tough" as the OM, but perhaps a little more user friendly.

atomic flounders are also known as Butterfly Stingrays. they run well over 200lbs.
Im using 40lb PP on a 50sha. 500yd spool, then topped with abour 150-yds of 40lb mono, then 80lb shock.... gives me plenty of capacity, and that reel isnt capable of breaking 40lb line with the drag locked... if somethin breaks, its a weak knot...

I have 2-12's and 1-10 and was thinking about the cps... but haven't gotten one yet and have heard good things about it... AK has one and it casts pretty sweet.. Also, fish w/ 20lb pp and last weekend had a decent fish on and what gave was the sand spike, bent that sucker at to a near 45deg angle...the OM12 is beastly...
