I saw a thread in the North Carolina board from Shooter talking about waking up with a migraine. Anybody else get them here, and what have you done, or your doctor done, to help them? I get wicked sinus headaches that morph into migraine's something quick. Never had the :--|, but I've felt like it. Usually my eyes and ears are so sensitive to sounds and light I have to just crawl in bed with the lights off and the door closed. I'm getting surgery on my sinuses in about a month or so, and hopefully that will help, but if it doesn't I need to look at other options.

get a script for imitrex and naproxen(sp?). Take them as soon as it starts. Excedrin migraine for minor ones.

My next door neighbor gets migraines. I can almost feel her agony. She has to stay in the house with the lights off for 2 days some times.
Thats gotta be miserable.

I get them once in a while. I used to get them a lot. Excedrin Migraine or any other over the counter meds that contain caffeine can be addictive and should be avoided. In fact, the neurologist I saw had a program for helping people get off of Excedrin Migraine (it's that common of an addiction).
He had me take Axert when I got a migraine and had me regularly taking Depakote to prevent migraines. Now I rarely get them and don't take any meds. If I get one I take some ibuprofen or alleve as soon as I feel it coming on.
Other things neurologist said to avoid - soda (diet or regular), coffe, alcohol.

I have had folks argue there is no such thing as a sinsus migraine but when ya can't stand light or sound and ya need to lock up the guns before ya shoot yourself or someone else thats sounds dern near close to one as I have heard.
If I feel one comming on if I can down 2 BC powders and any sinsus meds. that usally helps, don't care if I over dose on the mix as long as I stop hurtn :--|
Let me know how the surgery on the snot makers go and if it helps.

For sinus related headaches, the best thing I have ever found is called Sinus Buster. It contains capsaican peppers. Basically you are blasting hot pepper spray into your sinuses. It burns, but it works miracles!

I'd like to put the pain in my head into someone who doesn't think there are sinus induced migraines. "Lock up the guns" is no joke. It's downright miserable. Last time I was in Frisco I spent 1 of the 2 days I was there in our cabin with the blinds shut and the pillow over my head. Absolutely miserable. I'm meeting with the doc Friday to get the appointment for the surgery so I'll keep you posted.

tell ya what i used to get'em quite frequently, they just come outta nowhere sumtimes. what i did was shut myself away from light and sound in a dark room slamm a few meds and when i felt the :--| coming on, yack it out and almost instantly the pain is releived. its like u throw up the the poison and ur all better. at least that has been my experiences with them.

I've never had one, but my 5 year old son gets them, and has since he was 2. My wife gets them also. She feels like poo when our son gets one cause she says he inherited that trait from her.
What seems to work for my wife if she catches it early enough is a B/C powder and a caffeinated soda as a chaser. She was told this by one of those old fashioned country Dr.s who have more sense than education, and it is her 'go to' fix. Again, she says it works for her if she takes it the moment she feels one coming on. I guess like most pain, if you 'get behind' the pain, it's witch to catch up.
Hy heart goes out to all of you all. I know how my loved ones suffer, so I can only imagine what you feel.

I get really really really bad migraines. Well I should say I used to, now I only get really bad migraines.
When I was in my younger teens I was even in the hospital for migraines.
I get the full effect of hands/face going numb, major vision disturbances, nausea and vomiting, loss of coordination.
I went to a couple Dr's and tried numerous medications nothing seems to help. So then I found the internet and started doing my own research on them. I started keeping a food/activity log of EVERYTHING I ate and did when migraines happened. I started narrowing down my risk factors (which are chocolate, greasy food). I then found my triggers which are heavy exertion(like playing hockey/firefighting) and bright lights. I also theorize it has something to do with dehydration. It took me about a year to figure all this out but when I did I was able to cut my migraines from a couple times a month to a couple times a year.
I also found that if I take plain ole Ibuprofen at the first signs of a migraine (usually losing my periphial vision or getting the aura effect) I can pretty much knock out a migraine before it gets too bad. None of the prescription stuff works and in fact some of them make it worse. The same with tylenol (acetaminophen) Migraine, it makes it worse.
So anyone who suffers from migraines should do everything they can to find their own risk factors and triggers. Once you find them you can balance the risks and triggers and lead a normal life. I still play hockey, do firefighting, and eat greasy food. I just know that I can't eat at McDonalds and then go play a hockey game. Since you never know when you will be fighting a fire I keep a bottle of ibuprofen in my firegear and I swallow a couple of those the first free minute I get even if i don't feel any signs of a migraine coming on.

You may never know, but I definitely know when I'll be fighting a fire - NEVER! I guess you must be a fireman or a volunteer fireman;)

A B/C powder and Goody's powder are essentially a powdered asparin or tylenol. It is one of those things folks down south are probably more familiar with than others. Nothing more than a powdered analgesic that is absorbed quicker than others. That and the caffeine dialating blood vessels seems to do the trick for my wife.

Sounds good! Try letting it dissolve under your tongue instead of swallowing it! It will act much quicker

I've never tried B/C powders or Goody's. According to the Mrs., it's all she can do to choke hers down. I'll suggest the under the tongue thing, but I can imagine the look she'll give me. You know that "you've got to be out of your bleepin mind" look. My wifes really good at that!

I get that symptom all the time with my migraines. Esp my fingers. Its really really weird I can feel the numbness going from finger to finger kinda like rolling across my hand. My lower face around my jaw bone is also a big target (usually later on in my migraine). I even got my cat scanned (they said I could play coach!) once in the ER because of it, of course it didn't show anything.

Then I got divorced.......:eek:. Seriously, stress is a big factor for them. Haven't had one in a while. Knock on wood.

You bring up a good point dogg ...reducing my stress level in addition to other things has helped. I have never been officially diagnosed but I get them. Well I used to get them quite often. Now as long as I keep a decent schedule I am OK. I started noticing that I was getting them a lot less once I changed my diet. Then I changed my sleep time and started seeing a chiropractor and now I rarely get them. When I do they are not as bad as they used to be. I think I have had 2 or 3 this year. I used to get 2 or 3 a month. If I feel it starting Ibuprofen will usually stop it however if it does not stop or I can't stop it early then I confine myself to a cool, quiet, and DARK bedroom and take 2 PMs. 5-6 hours later I feel like new again.

Dang RuddeDog, I hadn't made that correlation. Since my wife left me I haven't had nearly the number of migraines I used to have!!!
