have a friend sellina nice 6500ss and was wondering if it would be a good reel for plugging metals etc on a 9ft rod

You could, but it's not as light or smooth as a Stradic. Penn reels are usually clunky and heavy. That's been my experience. All my reels are Shimano except for an old Daiwa I got for free once.

I agree with E................Good reels... but heavy. The anti reverse gets fouled up real easy too if your not carefull about cleaning them.

i think it;s a great tough reel that is used my many, including charter captains.
i use the 5500 for jiggin
