Has anybody had a chance to try one in salt water and if so what do you think? What does one get for an extra $40.00. They sell for $179.00.

i have 2 of the 5000 series, tried and caught fish with it on saltwater. i'll tell you this, it's the only reel i have that's not JDM in a few years.

here's a few pics of it.

Hey HR,

Is the 5000 a good size for plugging or should I stick w/ the 4000? I like the bigger knob on the 5000, but I worry that I might not want to handhold that all day.

Thanks,
Chump

the 4000 and 5000 has interhcangeable spools.
there's just a 2.5 ounces difference in weigth between the 2. you won't notice it, go with the 5000 for more line cap.

Hey HellRhay, so if its the only reel you have that is not JDM, am I to believe that JDM reels are a cut above what is avalable from US distributors?

Thanks, HR. I'll have to pick it up when I get to BPS next time. I noticed from their schematic that even the 4000 size has that nice handle.

Thanks,
Chump

There are three noticable differences in the new Stradics:
-Waterproof drag
-Stainless handle
-"Propulsion" spool- made with braid in mind for longer casts and less line twist

Video explaining features on Shimanos new lineup. (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7968094485432077826&q=shimano+sustain&total=1&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0)

There is also a new reel that replaces the old Stradic at the $129.99 price point.

The Saros is almost identical to the Stradic Fi, except for a different line-wrapping pattern that is less braid-friendly.

imo, yes, in most cases they are, but too damn expensive.

Well, I've got the 5000 on the way from Cabelas, only place that had one in stock. I use Berkley Fireline exclusively on my spinning reels so I'll fill one with 14 and one with 20. Can't wait to try it out!!:fishing:

with 20# fireline you'll probably get around 180-200yards on it. i had 240 yards of 30# sufix on mine.
how much is cables selling them if you dont mind me asking?

and to asnwer your question on japanese reels-
YES, they are a step better. desgin, precision and materials used. if it matters to you also, they are not made in China. Shimano reels are not made in China, it's either made in Japan or Malaysia. In the USA market or SIC (Shimano USA) only the stella is made iin japan- the rest are made in Malaysia. With the Daiwa reels, the powersurf's are made in Thailand while the Basia is made in Japan.
