Recently I have used a 52MR with great success, however, a middle treble hook bent and tail treble hook snapped off.

Replacing the middle and top treble hooks is not difficult (unscrew the bracket) but the tail hook is a different story.

Has any one tried:
1. Putting a split ring on the tail hook?
2. Leaving off the middle hook?

I wonder if this would effect the balance of the lure...

Never tried the split ring thing. You can leave the middle hook out it wont mess up the balance of the lure but make sure that you put either either treble hooks on or single hooks on. If you put a treble and a single hook on it could mess up the balance of how the lure swims in the water.

how did you manage to bend the treble and snap off the other?

They sell cut hooks (the eye is cut) for replacing such stuff. Very common up north for through wired stuff.
