If you get a king or anything that makes sprints you might be in a little trouble. Seaboys are pretty much bare-bones reels. They're good for a cheap stump-stick for dropping straight down from a pier for snook or from a boat for snapper, but I don't know about how well they'd do in a fight where a lot of time and a smooth drag are necessary.

Used to own one, fortunately it got stolen. Don't waste the money on it. If you want a cheap but dependable king or cobia reel, get a Shimano Speedmaster. BTW, forgot to mention it but I catch kings off the pier over here on a Shimano Stradic 5000.

There is a Shimano Speedmaster reel for sale on the Marketplace forum of pierandsurf by a guy named New Kent Newbie. I think he has it for sale at $100 used and if I not mistaken it will hole 480 yards of 20# mono.

Or get the 4/0 you were already talking about getting and you would be better off than the Penn 190 Seaboy that you previously thought about. I would forget the idea of braid around all the the other lines because of the fact of trying to get the tangles out of the small diameter. Don't take the braid thing the wrong way, I use braid too, just not for pin-rigging and I know what the norm has been for years.

I would trust the Penn.It will outlast the other mentioned reels.A drag is as good as the care taken of it.

I hate Seaboys, the whole line of them. They are a pain in the arse and require constant care. Like someone else said, their primary use should be a straight drop down, other than that, good.
With that being said, you never know how YOU will like a reel until YOU try one in YOUR own hands...

From all the bashings it is getting the 190 must not come up to the standards of the other old Penns.I have 9's,10's,209's,309,68's,500's and several Senators.Have not found weakness in any of them.

jmo, but if ya want a cheap solid reel get a 4/0 or jigmaster, fill it with 20-30 lb mono and shock and be done with it...

not a penn fann at all, but cant deny they stand the test of time and catch fish

old penn's would. New Penn's are crapola. Get a TLD 20 or 25. You'll be very happy with it.

that reel will corrode away in about 2 years. Get something decent and it will last a lifetime.

i second the speedmaster, you can get a brand new one for 109 or a combo from boaters world i think is about 149 and has a nice live bait rod, i have 4 of them and there are awesome

Hard to beat an ebay penn 6/0 high speed.

i actually used a penn seaboy 185 on the surf.
it casts pretty well without any control, just give it some oil.

youd be surprised what it can do.. and it whines nicely when line peeling out.
