Why did you guys stop the Striper Tournaments? I think you guys had the last one the year before I joined. Is it something that could be done again?

Because it further threatens an already threatened resource by providing a monetary incentive to catch and kill the largest striper, thereby resulting in an increased number of people fishing for, and keeping fish that would normally be released. Do people really need a tournament to be going on to be fishing? Is merely being out there and having a chance to hook "the big one" no longer good enough for folks that they need a money tournament to provide them the incentive to fish?

I'm confused. You guys should go fishing.

I would have to disagree. The people that would pay a fee to fish the tournament would be fishing for stripers anyway. Having a one day event for 100+ people wouldn't destroy the Striper population is the bay.. Im my opinion it's not even about the money... I wouldn't have a problem with giving the winner a nice rod, and have the rest for to a charity... If we care so much about the places we fish why not have events that would allow us to put money into them.

By the way! We could have the event before the season opens.. Thay way all fish would have to be released..

a lot of the offshore tourny's are the honor system with a polygraph test at the end, if needed. just sayin that how they do it. instead of a tourney, ps should meet up and clean up some of out fishing holes...

Those people who'd be out fishing anyway will be out there regardless. It's the ones that are on the fence who are now out there because there's money on the line.

A one day event with 100 people would be a drop in the bucket, but what about a tourney every weekend up and down the eastern seaboard? HT had one two weekends ago, Steves had one this past weekend, and that's just in MD.

A tourney that puts 100% of it's proceeds into a conservation effort would be great, but how many entrants would you have? I'm all for that, but I'm afraid a tourney like that would have dismal participation if people knew that there's no chance of winning any money back.

Wow, all you people posting who didn't even participate in the last tournament. The reason is because the tournament was put on by capital longcasters. Those guys got tochterman's to donate prizes. They had to have put a lot of work into the tournament. BTW, the tournament was before opening season and all stripers were released back into the surf!

FLFisherman won the tournament using one rod right next to me. He wasn't planning on entering and having the desired spot, I was gracious enough to let him slip in there. Well, he put me to shame!

Anyway, I'm pretty sure capital longcasters disbanded or something. I think Richard Burton moved to Florida and I haven't seen James around for a while. Those guys were class acts and they put on a great tournament!

good Idea,,

That's a good idear K . . . but logistically, it would be terrible. Fisherman are not known to be the most "honest" people (when it comes to their catch/if money is involved) so it'll be a tough one. I've never organized a fishing tournament before so there might be a system in place for checking catches . . . how about we have a mini-tournament. At the next Spring Fling, everyone can put money into a hat, split is 60-30-10 or something like that. At least there, we'll all know each other and have a sense of security when it comes to cheating.

This post was not meant to offend anyone. I just see other boards going Events, and it would be cool if we could do our own. I don't have a problem taking part in aa event that SOL (for example) does, but if i had a choice I would do a P&S even first.

The logistics issue can be easily overcome. The HT Drum tournament is a good example. You cannot keep those bulls so you need to call/radio in your catch and a judge will be there as quick as they can. If the fee was high enough I am sure you could have enough judges on hand to keep the time out of water to a minimum.

Personally I am not against tournaments like this but I have never entered one to this date. Does not mean I won't ever but as for now I would not.

As for getting together and meeting people I thought that was what the Spring Fling was for.

I remember that! :D Who was the other guy next to you that I asked to fit in between? He came all the way from NC. Man I have to think about that one for a moment. That was the year I had an INSANE spring fishing season!! It sort of coincided with having woman problems and needing to get out and fish more.:p Whatever happened to the video they were going to produce of me catching all my fish? I was supposed to be some hit TV star!? LOL!;)

BTW my wife came back from Iraq last night after 16 months. Life is good but it is hard adjusting back to normality. 16 months is a long time!!

Yeah, Jason, my wife has been in Texas for six months now and it seems like an eternity. I'm glad she made it back safely. When are you gonna make it back to the good ole US of A?

Yeah that was a nice tourney. The turn out was crazy ..there was peeps from the small boat ramp to the jetty 2 -3 hundred anglers

At the next Spring Fling, everyone can put money into a hat, split is 60-30-10 or something like that

I like your idea F-C

Whatever happened to the video they were going to produce of me catching all my fish?

I am in a Club that holds just the tourneys you guys are talking about, there called CPR (Catch, Photo & Release). You are given a measuring tape at sign in to use in "ALL" photos, fish are caught, photographed for size then splashed. Most inches at the end wins, and you can have multiple divisions. If that don't work for you treehugging type, don't fish at all. Just my $.02 worth......PEACE OUT

tugcapn;all:

here in the commonwealth, we have a "governor's citation" program for catch,weigh/measure/photograph, tag & release on all gamefish species. (it started with "preserving the BIG cows" in rockfish/sea-run stripers, but has spread to other species.)

we (hopefully) get to catch the tagged/released cow again & the angler gets a framed "governor's certificate" with a color photo for the wall.

fwiw, the boat captains/guides here have gotten VERY quick at doing all the above, almost before the "cow rock" knows that she's on the boat, shes back swimming.

i'd like a tournament for sharks that is just that sort.

GOOD LUCK out on the water, ts
