Has anyone done any testing or read any results on whether red led lights effect drum like the bright white ones do?
Bottom line, can I use a red light without caution while drumming instead of sparingly using a white light. Just another round of "recliner fishing."
But to check lines...Ya need it.. the less ya use light @ night the more your eyes become adjusted to darkness.. I think it takes 27 min or so to be re-adjusted after seeing light.. So less is more.. JAM

When I am night fishing I crack a couple of big green glow lights. I put one up by the truck and carry one in my hand when baiting up if there is no moonlight. A soft light that is constant and not flashing won't spook the drum.
Another good use for smaller green glow lights......
Put them down by the hook ;-)

that is one of the reasons I was asking about the red light. ALthough, last Sun. I was wading, I was fortunate enough to have the moon out, I was actually looking at shadows of the foam on the bottom of the surf. That was nice. :)

I've used red , green and even "black light" led head lamps.
They are not nearly as bright as standard whilte bulbs, some pen lights come with small colored lenses that will also help diffuse the bright light of a standard bulb, or a little colored tape can be used to dull an overly bright flashlight.
I have gone to the very small clip on led lamps that slide onto the bill of a baseball cap. Hands free and don't way near as much as the standard headlamp, and are also a little less bright. Down side is they take fairly expensive non standard batteries (the flat ones).
I'm with Jam the less light you can get by with the better, as far as I'm concerned.

I use the Ray-o-Vac 3 beam LED/ Halogen.
The red save your eye's and work. very well in most fishing situations it does not seem to bother the fish. The white LED I use when select lures, you know when you want a certian color. The Halogen when shit hits the fan and you need to see what you are doing. It is light enough for me and runs on 3 AAA batteries.
But as JAM said Less is more better!!!

Is to shine your headlights right into the water so you can attract bait fish. Then the big fish will come to eat the baitfish and you can catch them as well. This will also allow you to see what is going on. Now that ya know the trick...go fish far, far away from me!:D
I am convinced that lights hurt the bite. Hate em but sometimes I have to use em. I try to never shine them directly into the water. Red is the best I think. I know the sea turtle people use red while watching them lay eggs. Red (in my opinion) is best.
Ya'll ever tell another "fisherman" to turn his headlights off and have em get mad....hate lights and the people that insist on shining directly into the water.

On Navy Ships at Night all passage ways are lit with RED lights,Does not cause loss of Night Vision.
Do not think Red light would bother fish, BUT I always turn my back to the water when using it

Don't know if I was being "put on" or not, but fella told me to use the chartruse (sp) line with a "black light" at night. Says the fishing line looks like a neon highway... never tried it, be going to, just pass it on for the knowledge factor fer ya... myself, don't really use a light and if I have to use it very sparingly............ salt

obviously it sounds as if the tried and true little light is good, no light is better. It was just a thought. Don't worry, you guys will not see me at the drum hole with a stadium full of red lights doing the happy dance.... LOL
