What kind of hooks do y'all use to replace treble hooks with on lures? I've heard lots of folks doing that, but I'm not sure what kind, size, brand, etc.

My Minolures get a little rusty around the eye and hook points. I try to sharpen as long as I can. After awhile, I go with the size 4 red hooks from eagle claw, they still rust but not as fast. They are usually inexpensive. Today I picked up a pack of mustad size four to make Hank Brown rigs for king mackerel. I have tried most every brand, I can't tell that much difference in them. Many lures I have purchased, come stock with fat, dull, stainless steel hooks. I have always shapened those. Get you some of each and try them out.

I use VMC replacement hooks. Allot of lures come with them today and they are plenty sharp.

One thing I forgot to mention was that I wanted to replace the trebles with J hooks. That was the point of my whole questions but I forgot to mention that.

Whe I buy lures that have trebles on them I replace the factory trebles with owner or gammies. That's just me.

I'll check out the VMC's. I've used their hooks in the past and I liked them. Never thought about putting those on lures. Do they make a certain kind with a larger eye or does a standard eye fit?

Split rings are something else to keep in mind. For those lures straight out the box you dont have to worry about it, but if you need to replace old rusty split rings, make sure you get some that are good and strong. Some look strong but just dont hold up under pressure.
The hook needs to be loose on the ring. Mabye look into trying a trailer hook, they have larger eyes. I guess you just need to try some different styles to see whats going to work best. I just replace the trebles with vmc trebles.

Terry,
All metal lures for blues get Salmon Siwash single hooks (stainless) as it is easier to take one hook out of a chomper blues's mouth than 3 hooks... ;)

VMC's site has a chart for different manufactures. I have replaced trebles on some Manns Stretch lures with J hooks for Grouper and they work great.

I saw those, and that's more or less the idea that I had. Treble hooks are a pain in the rear.

I would like to use owner hooks but can't afford those for every lure.. So I use Gammies.. One thing I always do is change the split ring as well. If the lure didn't have one then I just add it. Getting ready to do that this winter as well.. I try to change them every season.

I’ve only change the hooks on a lot of my metal lures like sting silvers Hopkins ect. I like to use a live bait hook like the Mustad 9175. I usually match the size of the treble hook and go one size larger.
