Have any of you ever powder coated any reel parts (i.e. frames, posts, stands, side rings, etc,) and if so, how did it hold up? Thinking about doing that with some of my Penn Jigmasters and Squidders but would like some feedback first.

Sears sells a powder coating gun for about $150.

I had some older aluminum Newell bars and bases powdercoated. The prep work is key. My parts were beadblasted first to get the factory powercoating first and then it was thoroughly cleaned. It came out pretty good.
The tolerances on jigmasters and squidders reels and parts are more forgiving than Newells. I was able to assemble my Penns easier than my Newells. The powdercoating adds some 'thickness' to the parts and Newell tolerances are tighter than the Penns

That's a 505HS with purple parts (flash turned it blue).

A G322 with some upgraded parts.
Good luck.

Thanks for that info! The only thing that bothers me is the side plates. They fit pretty tight the way it is! From what I can see, I will need to invest in a fluid-bed and a toaster oven, as well as the paint. Only other thing that bugs me is the wear on the top front crossbar from line rubbing.

I have used powder coating a lot in the work I do(restoring old scooters) and powder coating is brilliant as long as you prep well. Tolerances are definately an issue. The down side, and I stress this, is if you get a chip in the surface, it will allow moisture underneath, causing problems. As far as the wear on the top bar, I think it will form a grove, as you can smooth powder coat with sandpaper(for painting over), so I reckon repeated rubbing from the line will do the same thing.

Alan Tani has someone make the handles for him. He has the whole handle arm and knob assembly available for Newells. Will try to fine email for you.
