Guys;
I am not going to promote anything here as I know it is not allowed, but I am in the process of finalizing a product that I have developed that will launch a 4-6 oz weight with cut bait 200-250 yards for approx $100-$150 and I want to see what the reaction to such a device might be.
My main audience would be older fishermen, youths and particularly handicapped fishermen who can no longer make that heavy heave but can still reel in a big fish.
This is not a bogus device as I have it working now and I want to price it right for the average Joe.
Sorry I cant give more details on the techs, but my patent is still pending.:fishing:

Well if it don't toss 8 to 10oz and a chunk it aint much use on the OBX, but when ya get it built I am sure there will be some of the P&S folks that will give it a test try and let the rest of us know how it does.

seen a video once of a guy with a frozen bait/weight cylinder shape and shot it with compressed air out of the back of his truck ....

Without giving away too much, this is a shoulder launch device, weighs less than 5 pounds and can use compressed air, tire pump, or co2 in the various forms avaiable.
As to 8-10 oz weights, have not tried them yet, but feel sure I can achieve this with higher psi pressure, although my intent was never to compete with heavy heavers, just for average joes, at average prices to get beyond the the 2nd or 3rd breakers at a reasonable cost.:)

Hey, if you can pull it off then more power to you. Just keep in mind that I actually died (http://pierandsurf.com/oldcontent/articles/aprilfools2007.shtml) doing the same thing.

JAM is right on that one. It would be considered a firearm inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and that's definitely a no-no. Another guy had a cannon that launched a frozen bait and I think someone called the NPS to see if they could use it and they were told no because of the firearm restriction.

Air pressure is legal.
Not much to it. You make a rest for a rod with an 850 penn spin reel layin along side a pvc pipe. This stands up on pvc T bar. clip on a 2 hook rigged with shrimp frozen in tube. Remove rig from tube.
Insert frozen in rig barrel and Fooom..
It draws such a crowd when you whip it out it aint worth it IMOP.

You sure about that? Pellet guns and air rifles are not legal.
Sounds like a giant spud gun for bait.:D

Exactly- might be nice for someone legally handicapped, for myself the casting is the REASON I go fishing, otherwise I'd just buy another boat

Why don'tcha take that thing to the golf course and see how many golfers are interested- I'm sure they would lose less golf balls that way. :--|
While it might help them find the fairway, it sure as h*ll ain't gonna make em a better golfer.
Why do people insist on taking the "sport" out of sports ?
All in the name of helping us be more "successful" while lining their pockets at the same time.

Now Mark, Im sure the TRUE WBB's are wondering why you'd make a remark like that as they wind their line back onto the Campbells Soup can. ;):D Just messing with ya!

I have a water balloon launcher made from 4 long pieces of surgical tubing and a mesh pouch. It'll fire a balloon filled to the size of a softball about 200 yds. Of course you have stretch the tubing about 10 ft to do it.
I wonder how far it'd lob 8 plus bait

Geesh .... relax everybody ... let him develop whatever he wants it is a free country ... still.
How come no one jumps all over people getting kids/locals to yak out their baits to the outer bar? Seems like a different technology taking the sport out of the sport to me.
Personally ... I would not use one but let people make up their own minds on it.
I bet if you could launch a bait off PLO 300 yards and discovered a hole holding nice sized cobias many people opposed might change their minds ;)
Bazooka or boat ... technology

Yeah, I might have overreacted.
It just touched a nerve, hey if all ya want is easy success, there's always dynamite- but the yakkers might need to learn how to paddle faster before tossing it :D:D

Well it seems that there are multiple opinions out there about this, which is fine, as you can decide what you fish for and how.
But look back at my original thread, I said my market was for older fisherman\women, handicap people and others who might just not have the heave to get the bait out to where the fish are.
Ditto on the Yak, thing, had not considered that as a comparison, but it is using technology to get the bait out past where you normally cant cast.
Bottom line, I will develop and market this, and you can choose not to buy. But remember, all this does is get the bait out to where the fish are,,,,it does nothing to help u hook and land the fish,,,which imho is the main object..
As to the legality issue, if someone would be so kind as to point to any web site that specifically states that the use of compressed air is against federal, state or local fishing regs, I would greatly appreciate it. As for now, I must treat it as urban legend until I know the facts. (someone call "The Myth Busters" maybe they can help...lol)
Thanks to all who responded, both positive and negative as it helps show both sides of the issue. Also keep the comments comming, they are very helpful and appreciated..

If you knew any of the folks on here you would already know they are very knowlegable about what they say, no ones going to do your legal legwork for you. If you don't want to believe the folks that have already told you it is illegal on federal land so be it, waste your time, not ours.
THere is absolutely NOTHING new about what you are promoting, Every so often someone pops up here wanting to promote their version of the spud gun.
I'm willing to bet there are plenty of old guys and a few youngins that can outcast you. If you don't see that achieving casting distance is a worthwhile endeavor in it's own right, fine.
You'll have to forgive me if I seem a bit hostile. I don't spend hours crafting the art of casting just to have someone come along to tell me there's an "easier" way to do it. Plus I have no way of knowing you aren't the same guy that's been on here before, just using a different computer and username.
Maybe ya are maybe ya ain't,
at any rate I've made my point.
Good luck to ya.

Well it seems I have touched a nerve with you Surf,,,you seem to be threatened by new technology, probably like the cane pole fisher man was with the first casting reel or when the steam engine threatened the sailing ship.
You and I know this will never be allowed in Casting Competions, and I never intended it to be. But perhaps your days on the beach, when u flex your muscles and awe everyone with your super casts are over. Sorry if you feel threatened, but the ocean is open and if I can open the ocean surf for everyone, I will.
Excuse me but your elitist attitude makes me ill.

Ok;
You asked me to do my own Legal legwork and here it is:
May I refer you all to the above section from the Cornell School of Law
http://straylight.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode18/usc_sec_18_00000921----000-.html
§ 921. Definitions\

(C) any firearm muffler or firearm silencer; or
(D) any destructive device. Such term does not include an antique firearm.
(4) The term “destructive device” means—
(A) any explosive, incendiary, or poison gas—
(i) bomb,
(ii) grenade,
(iii) rocket having a propellant charge of more than four ounces,
(iv) missile having an explosive or incendiary charge of more than one-quarter ounce,
(v) mine, or
(vi) device similar to any of the devices described in the preceding clauses;

Can you envision what it would be like if this sort of thing caught on.
I'm not wanting to go to the beach surf fishing to find myself surrounded by a bunch of people popping off air cannons all around me. There is already enough ways for a fisher(person) ;) to wind up in the emergency room without adding this to the list.
As far as it's only for those that can't cast, I ain't buying it. Most people arent going to yak baits or attempt 200 yd casts to catch 12" blues.
(They'd never feel the bite if they did)
If you dont have the physical ability to make a decent cast, how are you going to fight and play a large preadator? The casting can be learned, and there are plenty of sawed off runts that can out cast me, I ain't worried about being replaced by "technology".
If it's not specifically banned in some locales, I have no doubt it wouldnt take long to get banned- if everybody started showing up with a bazooka.
This one can put the bait out 200yds, the next one (new and improved, I can hear it now :D)would be going for 300yds. That in itself raises questions of mega tangles, needing even more weight to hold bottom, and more debris and break offs. Tangles lead to tempers, how long before they flare to the point of turning this thing into a weapon? No doubt the NPS already thought of that !
Last but not least, the tranquility of fishing would be gone. It may not be the same as a shotgun going off, but none the less I'm fishing, not duck hunting. :D
I'm sure it seems like an intriguing idea, but please, just take a casting lesson.

Doesn't take a genius or physics major to realize your using the compressed air to expel your projectile, but go ahead and run it by the NPS, see if they'll buy into your "loophole".
