Hello all, I'm going to give surf fishing a try. I'm not new to fishing at all but surf fishing will be new to me. My first question is; How far South do I need to go this time of year to have a reasonbly good chance of catching something and what would it be? (I've been studying the boards here and it seems there is not much going on in the MD, DE areas.)

appears other than some puppy drum, scattered stripers on trout gear and chunks, and doggies and the real deal biters (which oughta be fun) (Outer Banks, NC) not much going on

Welcome aboard. Just keep the braid vs mono questions to a minimum ;) jk

Howdy and welcome Scorpion,

If you can, head to Florida. I'm sure the folks in the FLA forum can help you out with what's biting. Up around here, we may as well wait till Spring unless you like doggies and casting practice.

Oh Noooooooooooooooo!!!!! Not another New Guy!!!!! We have all we can stand now!!!! How are we ever going to find the time to reply to all those silly questions???:D Just kidding!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the board and it's good to have you here! I'm in Florida and ain't nothin' bitin' here either. Course, we just had a MAJOR cold front come through and it was only in the 50's here today. Actually heard it snowed nearby! Supposed to warm up again in a couple of days, so we'll see. Can't guarantee any fish, but at least you'll be a little warmer down here.

Howdy Scorpion. This time of year you may catch some in the rivers, despite what you may hear. But if surf is what you are targeting then plan a trip where you can hit the beach (and freeze) and then go out on a boat the following day.

As for Maryland beaches, one of the few places on the coast where you can legally make a fire is the Federal side of Assateague...best bring alot of wood and plenty of something to get the fire started. Then again my winter gear and I may be heading that way in a few weeks.

Hey Scorp,

If you like catching fish, you might want to consider investing in a kayak. For the price of two 8 n bait outfits you can get a fully equiped yak.

Good luck in your quest, Tim

PS you may need to invest in a freezer and vaccum sealer.

NE Florida is cold right now. We get a few days of cold and then back to beautiful again. Mostly I have been catching black drum, eating size, and whiting, sea mullet. A trip here would best be done in late March and early April when the pompano are heading North for the summer. Pompano follow the 15 degree celsius isotherm, both when heading North and South.

South Florida is where the action is during winter. Fish like the warm waters down there. It is beautiful down there during January and February. Lots of quality fish crusing the beaches. It is their prime time down there.

In the mean time do like everyone else. Read the internet regarding your new found activity and work on obtaining your equipment. Scout the locations you will be fishing at when it warms up. Maybe build a rod or a lure or something. Spring will arrive soon enough and you will be grateful for the preparations you have made during the cold months.

I think you will love surf fishing. Get right with the program, and it will be all you want to do. Good luck with the cabin fever.:D

Yeah...after you cross the border and stop at the rest area for the free orange juice, they are turning cars around and sending them back North...unless you have a fake California driver's license and roofing tools!!!:D
