I know its probably old news, but I just heard and am very interested in the subject. Has anyone heard of this, or read up on it or anything?

May or June of 06 National Geographic did a cover story on this, I really don't remember much about it, but that would be a good starting point.
good luck

Neil,

Gospel of Judas is nothing new. Contrary to National Geographic doing a show on it, there really wasn't anything that was "discovered". Gospel of Judas is part of many "gospels" that was rejected by the early church fathers. These questionable gospels are known as the gnostic gospels. Early church fathers found these "gospels" lacked authenticity and more importantly were not consistent with orthodox Christianity.

Some of the other gnostic gospels are Gospel of Thomas, Acts of Peter, Acts of Thomas, Secret Book of James, and etc...

If you would like more academic evangelical response, read the article below. Albert Molher is president of Southern Baptist Seminary and one of the leading leaders in evangelical orthodox Christianity.

Probably one gospel that is even more spellbinding is that of Mary Magdalene....

There are only 4 authentic gospels...Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. All the rest would fall under the heading of "Gnostic gospels".

The central idea of all forms of Gnosticism is the belief that the key to saving truth lies in a hidden knowledge beyond what is revealed to us in Scripture. According to Gnosticism, “salvation” is a question of possessing this secret knowledge. This is a direct contradiction to the view of salvation as presented in the Scriptures where salvation is a question of knowing Christ, not some "secret knowldege".

I would suggest that you do your own research, hear the arguments from both sides, etc. The evidence for the authenticity of the 4 gospels versus the various gnostic gospels is overwhelming.

Most importantly as part of your research I would suggest that you actually read the primary sources themselves. Start with the gospel of Mark (it's the shortest one) and then read one of the Gnostic gospels. See which one has that "ring of truth" to it.

If anyone really wants to "find god"...do what I did...read them all...gave me a good central place to be...treat other people right...keep your temper in place...and don't "SAY IT"...you would be amazed how well it works...

I assume that by "read them all" you mean the biblical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and some/all of the Gnostic gospels as well. So I'm curious...it begs the question...which god did you "find"? The god of Gnosticism or the God of the Bible?

Fair enough...here's a link to a short article that speaks directly to your question about the Gospel of Judas and also addresses the National Geographic documentary that was referenced in a previous post. Doesn't take long to read and provides a good overview of the topic.

I can see NTKG's point. All he really asked for was some info on the Judas Gospel. My apologies to NTKG if he feels like we've hijacked his thread.

And...no offense rattler, but in an earlier post you put forth your conclusions as "find your own god...I think hes the same one anyway". If its true that you can just find/make up your own god and create your own rules to live by, then you could have saved your self a bunch of time and not read anything at all. :)

I fail to see how you could have read the Koran, the Bible, the Gnostic gospels, the book of Mormon, etc. and honestly come to the conclusion that the God of all these different worldviews is one and the same. The various world religions all have views of God that are fundamentally different, contradictory and mutually exclusive. Just a few obvious examples from a few of the world's major religions:

1) Islam has a Unitarian view of god (Allah).
2) Christianity has a Trinitarian view of God (God is Three in One - The Father, Son and Holy Spirit).
3) Hinduism has no standard view of god...depends on which version of Hinduism one adheres to...God may be everything (pantheism), there may be one god (theism) or there may be many gods (polytheism).
4) Buddhism has no deity at all.

So...if Islam has the correct view (Unitarian god), then Christianity cannot have the correct view (Trinitarian God)...and vice versa. If Buddhism is correct then there is no god at all. And so on and so forth...they all can't be one in the same.

And to bring it back full circle to NTKGs original question/point. If the Gospel of Judas is true, then the Bible is not...and vice versa. They contradict each other.

sorry, wolfgang...I was out of sorts due to a death in the family...as to the contradictions put forth by others, I just tried to take the best things that each had to offer...Life isn't perfect(I know mine isn't)...So I just decided to do the best I can to other people...simple things like hold the door, say thank you, let someone cut in front of me, ETC...why get upset/angry over some MORON...they have problems and I'm still smiling...my reading took alot of stress out of my life...I didn't nor do I agree with everything I have read with any one thing...I respect everyones choice...I like mine...

Many modern day Gnostic Christians, ( and yes they worship the same Christ as rest of Christendom ) believe that Bible is the ruling guide to live by along with all the other writings of the true Apostles. They believe all knowledge that you are ignorant of is a Secret and they should strive to learn all the knowledge that they can so that they might be closer to knowing Agape. Many also believe that mankind has, like everything else it has touched, corrupted the Word of God thru the many translations of the ancient codex and scriptures beginning with Saul and Luke which are contributed to the rewriting and interpretation of the four Gospels in the modern day New Testament most its other Books. This is what they believe to be the beginning of the separation between the teachings of Christ for the Glory of God and for the Glory of the Church. This timeline runs through the time of the first Council of Nicaea when all the Gnostic Christians were declared heretics and death warrants issued for their extermination, but there is still a few around.

You're wrong, we're right and you're going to Hell. Pick which denomination (Within Christianity) or go further and choose between religions themselves. The arrogance is astounding. How bout you live your life and I'll live mine and don't try to impose your beliefs on me and I'll reciprocate. Anyone remember blue laws? Tell me I can't buy something on Sunday? If the people of the world would just live their lives based on their own beliefs and not try to make everyone else conform to them what a beautiful world it would be. Alas, human nature ALWAYS rears it's ugly head.
