I've built a few spinning rods for light saltwater use and was thinking of building a surf rod. Have a couple of questions if anyone would like help.

Compared to the spinning rods, it appears there are way fewer guides on surf rods? I have more guides on my 6' 6" rods than most 10'+ commercial finished surf rods I've seen. Guessing this a casting distance issue?

My saltwater fishing involves plane travel. Tried searching for 3 piece surf rod blanks but didn't come up with anything. Does anyone make a decent quality 3 piece surf rod blank?

you can use 2pc rods

just check with your airline about the size and rules are fishing equipment.

I know Lamiglas and St. Croix have a couple of them.

Never used them, though.

If you want a 13'3" heaver, Dawia makes the Ballistic. It's a 3 piece rod.

Penn made some 3 pc rods a few years ago.I have the Penn V-3 that is rated 4-6oz.It's has two tip sections. one lighter then the other. So I guess it's really a 4 pc set.

most japan domestic rods are three piece when it comes to 12'8" and longer. and there's a million choices if you take the japan route all from brand name manufacturers such as shimano and daiwa.

the frwer guides are do to the bend the rod takes under pressure...some guys like a whippy tip and there will be more guides up top...you don't need a 3 pc. to fly...get a blank that is 50/50...hope this helps...

i choose the ballistics purely on the 3 pc availability in a good rod. i like to keep my rods in my truck for when i stop on the way tot he beach and the 3pc keeps them int he back seat out of the way. and it's smaller for when i travel to florida to visit my brother
