I need some education on fly fishing and I mean some basic stuff. Im interested in getting into fly fishing both freshwater and saltwater. Is there a combo that I could get that would suit both? Can I get an explanation on the line used and stuff like "tippet". Maybe some links that yall may have that I can educate myself would be great. Thanks.

Cabela's sells nice STARTER sets for fly fishing.

The tippet is just the end of the leader that hooks to the fly.

I was thinking about fly fishing a while back and stumbled across this site. Pretty helpful in picking up the lingo. I've yet to actually take the leap and buy the equipment...but that's another story.

I good place to start would be a 6 or 7 wt rod this would cover a wide range from panfish and bass in freshwater to Speckled trout and small redfish. You will probably want to start out with a weight forward floating line that matches the line weight of your rod. There are several ways of attaching a leader to your fly line and this is mostly a matter of personal preference so I would try as many as you can and then stick with what is comfortable. There are many different types of leaders and this will also be personal preference. I have used furled, tapered notless, tapered notted and even straight mono when I couldn't find anything else and in the end they all got the job done. For your tippet this is the section of line between your leader and your fly. I feel this is most important for floating little dry flies to feeding trout but other than that I either dont use it or just run a piece of floucarbon between 10-15 # test depending on size of fly and species of fish I am after. In the end the most important thing is to practice a lot and it deffinately helps if you can find someone to show you how to do it. That is how I learned my dad taught me when I was little.

This is my first year fly fishing and learned alot talking to other guys that fly fish. I think they are getting annoyed with me asking so many questions . So I read just about anything I can get my hands on.. I just purchased a 9wt tsunami rod and a 9wt hobbs creek large arbor reel.. Now i am using it for saltwater fishing for bass along the sod banks and blues. But I am keeping my eyes on the albies this summer..

I just hope I dont catch the bug and leave everything else. Alot of guys told me it will happen sooner then later.

I just got that a few weeks ago. Haven't got to play around with it as it rains every day that I have a chance to go. I have never fly fished so I can't speak on the quality of this combo. But it seems like a good starter kit. It has everything you need except tippet.
