I'm heading to Rotan Island, Honduras and am contemplating purchasing a surf rod to bring on the trip. The idea is that while my fiance and I are relaxing on the beach, I can be fishing. I understand that reefs line the beaches where we are heading. As well, there is not much surf, at least not within wading distance from the beach. Before I spend 200 dollars I'm hoping to get some solid advice as to my best bet for fishing while relaxing on the beach. If anyone could please help I would really appreciate it.
Thank-you
hmm i think we need a hawaiian user to answer that.
they fish on rock and coral so thatd be the best bet.

Don't worry be Happy!!. Just bring an ultralite rod 4 to 6lb test and something small. Spinners, jigs and spoons up to 1/4 oz. Something that may imitate shrimp, you may have the best fishing of your life. Target bonefish. Go wading behind the reef iin the shallows. Let us know how you did.

I'm bringing my fly rod for some flats fishing... However, I like the idea of sitting in the sand and waiting for a bite.... The idea being that there must be fishing cruising around shoreline and with live/organic bait I have a good chance at catching something. The reason I am planning on going with the surf rod setup is because it will allow me to cast far and second because it will handle whatever takes my bait....
Is this a wrong application for a surf rod? I guess I am hoping if I don't have to make the investment than I'm better off. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks-you.

Roatan does not lend itself well to dead stick surf fishing. The Eastern side of the island has a typical iron coast line and relatively deep water that would be fine for plugging, where access can be gained. The southwestern beach has beautiful sand beaches for about a mile and is populated, to many people to really surf fish. The western side of the island does have many flats with a very pronounced reef structure, probably a great place for the fly rod. Roatan has a lot of remote areas, it is very much old caribbean in flavor. You can catch yellowfin tuna from a john boat there, it is a divers paradise. Save your money and the effort of getting a surf rod to Roatan. Down at the west end you will run into a local guide named Artie, he can take you in his skiff fishing, mostly hand line fishing but he has a couple old penns for trolling, Roatan is better suited for the romance, indulge your fiance.

Deffinately take the fly rod. I had a day there while on a cruise a few years back and had my fly rod with me. we took a taxi to a secluded place and I actually got to catch a few fish mostly on crazy charlies and a few other smaller flies. I am sure if you had more time there then you would have the chance to find some bonefish too.

I'm tying some crazy charlies right now. Thanks for the advice... Based on the advice provided in this thread I doubt I am going to be bringing a surf rod on this trip.... Thank-you.
