Posters are asking about how a magnet works in a fishing reel

Here is a repost from 2001, The main explanation is by the well known late Gowge (George Pope)on a well know surf fishing board, the person referred to as "Richard" is nomadfl on this board.Remember this is before Penn 525 Mags were being marketed.

I just hope this is not deleted because it is from another board ...it is a classic from the past.

nomadfl,
Here is another explanation of how the mag unit works with an aluminum or any conductive material.

When you move a mag with it's field into a conductive or aluminum slab (Spool) when the spool spins an eddy current is generated by the aluminum spool and that eddy current induced inside the slab (Spool) causes an equal and opposite reaction to the forces being applied to the slab (Spool), which is the magnetic field. So you have opposite fields opposing each other, which causes the spool to slow down. Hopefully this makes some sense.
