Could someone help me tune my 30th so i can take my thumb off during a cast.
It"s just like it came out of the box, don"t know what to do change brakes, add oil, add grease, i"m totally lost here.
Any help would be much appericated. David

Is double stack the breaks....open the left side plate (I'm assuming you are a righty) put breaks that should have come with reel on to the 2 post that already have breaks. (note...I'd use the smaller of the 2 on the inside. that would be the red ones if I'm not mistaking. if it feels like this is too much breaking open er back up and take one off of only one post. also you can move the red ones to the outside of the post. play with it and figure out what works for ya. hope this helps. Oh ya, when putting the plate back on, thight'n the screws a little at a time and in an opposite-across pattern. Like tightening the screws on a tire hub.

don't want to do the grease if you can avoid it

First thing is to make sure there is no oil on the brass ring that the brake blocks rub against. Any oil on that ring will make the reel almost un-castable.
Found that out the hard way.

I cleaned the brass ring with denatured alcohol so that should be oil free. Had red brakes in it one end of the red brakes looks flat the other looked round. The round side was facing out, i added the black with the wide end facing out i"ll try this tommorow. I may be able to just switch the red and put the flat side out instead of the round side out but for now i"ll try both red and black. I just want to get it where i can throw it and practice (without using the thumb). I"ll post back how it does tommorow.

How much weight are you tossing?
You can add a bit of tension to the spool by turning the tension knob, located on the right side of the reel in the spool center. Check the spool play in free spool to see if there is some side to side movement of the spool. You can get by with from just a hint of side play to almost none, but you don't want to over tighten this knob, or it will kill your casting distance and is not good for the reel for the spool to be too tight.
The flat side out on the brakes will give you more braking, the round side less braking.

I actually clean the little pin where the brakes go on and make the hole on the brake block a little bigger so it slide in and out easier. If you do this right, you should hear the brakes knocking back and forth when you turn the spool.

Adding the black brakes with the wide end out was a little to much, for my next trick i am trying removing the black and turning the red around with the flat end out. with the black it fell about 30 yards short of thumbing it. My goal is to get it to the same distance as thumbing, then start using what tommy showed me yesterday:)
Oh yea i"m throwing 5oz.
I can hear the brakes knocking in there, i did clean the pin this time
I think yall got me on the right track, this is going to save me a lot of line!!!!!!!

How did just the red brakes turned around work, not to good!!!!!!! picked that out and reinstalled the black brakes with the narrow end out this time. Much better got another 10 yards, still 20 shy of thumbing but with technique and practice i should be able to over come that.......maybe
at least i"m having fun:D

David, I glad to hear that you had a chance to get out and do some casting. You picked the best when you hooked up with Tommy. Maybe you'll be able to give me a few pointers. Keep up the good work. I have as much fun fooling with my reels as I do fishing and that is saying a lot.

dmaaero: you can also mix/match the red/black brakes...

This thread brings up another question...
I thought the SL30 SHV line was supposed to be Daiwa's best casters b/c of the free floating spool during casts. I can cast that reel with 1 red brake with no problem at all. But my Saltist 30H I need 2 red brakes to keep it from getting loose in the cast.
Have y'all had the same experience?
here ya go.

no brakes.
ive tried all these thru trial and error on my sealines and grandwavez
oh sorry i forget to mention
the R can be reversed round or flat for more or less.
the B can be reversed flat or wider flat.
the W are same sizes top and bottom.
hope some of you guys who use daiwas like me found this post helpful.

I like a slow reel.
I run two reds in my Slosh and SHV reels - and keep the tension control tight on them, too.
Since I've been throwing the 30H, it seems very slow to me out of the box. So slow that the tension knob is waaay loose.
The only thing I can attribute this to is the air temps. Here in Virginia it's Winter, which means cold air temps and a slow reel. That's why I ain't takin' out the red blocks or putting faster greese in the bearing as of yet. I think it's gonna be a little on the fast side when the sun starts to heat things up.
If your reel is too fast, maybe try some Liquid Greese on the spool bearings. That stuff has helped me in the past with fast reels.
And I don't know if that "free floating spool" is anything more than a Daiwa sales gimmick.

While the brakes will save me a lot of line, they also rob distance. I"m curious how many if any throw this reel with no brakes, only a edumacted thumb.
