What is the best fishing setup that is versatile as far as surf and pier fishing? I want something that I can use when doing both types of fishing and at the same time cast far! I was looking at the Daiwa Saltist, but I don't know if it is the right reel for me. I would appreciate some advice for all you fishing experts.

Thank you

Are you comfortable throwing conv? If so the Daiwa Saltist is a good reel.

For a rod to match it up with, Tica, Tsunami and Ocean Master in the 11-12' range are good off the shelf rods. For a lil more dough you can get a 13' Breakaway HDX but that might be a lil much.

Location that you are fishing will have alot to do with how much rod you will need.

If say fishing in the Bay in Va most times you can get away with throwing 4-6oz.

However fishing in the ocean a lot of times you will need to throw 8oz+.

No, I'm not comfortable throwing convent.! I have never use a conventional reel to my knowledge. Do you suggest that I stick with spinning rods? If so, what spinning rod would you suggest? I need something for surf and pier.

imo i would go with a 10ft rod and a 6500 abu, 525mag, or a magged avet sx, or a 4000/5000 sized spinning reel

anything bigger than 10ft for a pier rod might be hard to throw on a busy pier. I dont know your budget but i would look at the tica dolphin, tsunami, st croix, ocean master or you could find a custom 10ft pole

I like the 4000-5000 size stradic fh you can find them on ebay under $100 pair it with one of the rods above i mentioned in the 3-6oz weight range if you want an all around rod

For the money, you cannot beat a Daiwa Emcast Plus 5500 Reel-$70(not the the Sport) teamed up with a Daiwa Eliminator Rod $29--$49 depending on length.

Spool it with 20 lb Berkely Fireline Crystal ($30 for 325 yards)and your in for about $150 and casting with the big boys..

Trust me on the rod, I have a Breakaway LDX and the Eliminator mounted with the Daiwai Emcast Plus and the Eliminator stands up to it

As much as I love my Stradics, I have to say that from the surf, the Emblem Pro looks darn good...to the point that I have ordered one. Obviously, I haven't thrown it yet, so I can't speak to it. I have a Stradic 5000FH that I will still swear by, and use it off the pier all the time. I have it spooled with 30 lb PP. I also agree with the above statements about not going over 10 ft. on your rod as far as Pier use goes. It will also do double duty from the beach. If you get a Stradic, you can use it from both beach and pier...find an 8000FH on sale, and save the xtra money and buy 2 rods...both Daiwa Eliminators, 2 different lengths, and you have the best of both worlds for not much money.

For the money, get one of the Ocean Master surf rods w/ the Emcast Plus combo. Great for piers and surfs and very durable.
