I am looking into getting a new reel and was wondering what the Avet sx is like. I have been using Abus for the last three years and I like them but was looking at the Avets and thought they looked nice. How are the drags compared to the abus?
Thanks

The SX is a nice reel.
It's very well made, has a great drag and casts very well (if magged right).
They are very fast out of the box. You can use them with static mags installed. Even better, have Bill's Customs put a knobby mag in one for ya.
I have an almost new Pro Gear CS501 fer sale if you're interested. It's almost identical to the SX but has a star drag instead of a lever. My Pro Gear has a knobby mag installed, too.

you can do your own knobby mag for about 5 bucks.
What I do with mine is put a static mag on them and then put a small magnet on a knobby that I adjust for conditions.

But are they worth the extra money? I have never used a non-levelwind reel and kinda like the convenience of the l-w. I guess it is just the question of the drag on the abu that has always concerned me.

if you want it they are...
I have never used a non-levelwind reel and kinda like the convenience of the l-w.
you get used to laying the line on with your thumb quickly... the distance advantage well out weighs the minor inconvenience of the non level wind reels
I guess it is just the question of the drag on the abu that has always concerned me.
question about what?... the ABU drags are good solid drags that can be easily upgraded... the Avets with the lever drag are quite simple to operate but other then that offer no real advantage over the Abu star drags...

The reel I use is an 6501 c3 with the dual bearing levelwind, bearing cog kit, abec 7 ceramics, and a knobby mag. I can get roughly 500' in the field and close to or more than 300' in fishing conditions. So is it really worth getting a new reel or just upgrade the drag and live with it?

I'd say keep the Abu and upgrade the drag.
And remove that level-wind if you want more distance.
id say just spend 20$ for carbon drags. and leave it alone.

I second that. If you get 500 feet in the field and can fish 300+ you are already doing more than most. I have a red Wally World 6000 that I tricked out to C5 trim and put some high speed gears in and love it. ABU stuff with or without the LW is good.
